spk_0 Big podcast.
spk_0 If you've been online for any length of time, meaning if you just today, for the very
spk_0 first time, God online and spend 10 minutes on Facebook or social media, or maybe you
spk_0 sign up for an email list and got an email from somebody trying to sell you something.
spk_0 It is very likely that you saw somebody read something from somebody or heard somebody
spk_0 speaking in a way that a lot of people feel is over sharing.
spk_0 I'm going to dive deeper into that.
spk_0 It's built a big podcast, the marketing podcast, four podcasters.
spk_0 If you've got a podcast that you want to grow, give more people to it, make more money,
spk_0 make impact.
spk_0 More or less make a podcast that matters, something that people care about, something that if
spk_0 it went away, you would hear from people.
spk_0 That's what this podcast is about.
spk_0 By the way, it's been a minute since I've been here.
spk_0 I've been caught up on some other projects.
spk_0 That's the beauty of what I do.
spk_0 I get to work on all sorts of different things.
spk_0 Sometimes it takes me away from this.
spk_0 So my apologies if you've been waiting, but I guess that's the point when you've got a
spk_0 good podcast and you do something that people care about, you were going to hear, hey,
spk_0 where's that next episode?
spk_0 We'll talk a little bit about that today.
spk_0 By the way, my name is David Hooper, bigpodcast.com.
spk_0 That's the website.
spk_0 I'm in the middle of a series of some things that Josh Spector has said about content
spk_0 creation, specifically about developing your voice, making content that stands out from
spk_0 all the other content out there.
spk_0 The first couple of topics I've already talked about, they are already out.
spk_0 You can go to bigpodcast.com slash subscribe, get those first two episodes.
spk_0 This one, he talks about showcasing your flaws.
spk_0 And this, I don't know if you want to showcase your flaws.
spk_0 I think it's okay for you to mention a flaw, but showcase them.
spk_0 I'm not sure about that.
spk_0 This is what Josh says.
spk_0 He says, the most interesting creators have flaws.
spk_0 Your voice should as well.
spk_0 Don't be perfect.
spk_0 Write rough around the edges or in your cases of podcast or broadcast or record, speak rough
spk_0 around the edges.
spk_0 Imperfections are interesting.
spk_0 They draw people in.
spk_0 They make people think incorporating them, make sure writing, again, in your case, your
spk_0 podcast, authentic and real.
spk_0 Perfect is boring.
spk_0 I agree with that.
spk_0 Perfect is boring, but showcase your flaws.
spk_0 This is where I think a lot of podcasters and a lot of content creators in general, writers,
spk_0 social media guys, YouTubers.
spk_0 Showcase your flaws.
spk_0 That gets into what I call failure porn.
spk_0 And if you've ever been in the evangelical church, any kind of content those guys are creating
spk_0 around getting saved, that falls prey to this all the time.
spk_0 You will hear somebody say, I was leading a bad life.
spk_0 I was in a homosexual relationship.
spk_0 I was cheating on my girlfriend.
spk_0 I was doing drugs and list all the quote unquote bad things that somebody was involved with.
spk_0 Then have the remedy, oh, then I found Jesus and everything is fine.
spk_0 The whole point of church, it's Jesus accepting Jesus, go to heaven.
spk_0 You know the deal you've heard that.
spk_0 Why are these guys spending so much time on their flaws?
spk_0 It's because it scratches that itch.
spk_0 People love the dirt.
spk_0 They're not talking about what happened afterwards.
spk_0 That's an afterthought.
spk_0 You're talking about how bad you were.
spk_0 And I get it.
spk_0 You want to come down to where people are.
spk_0 And just to be clear, I'm going to say this again, I'm not saying that somebody who's
spk_0 doing any of those things that I mentioned on that list is bad.
spk_0 But a lot of times in content creation, you are going down to where people are.
spk_0 You're trying to be relatable and you're trying to bring them up to whatever the next level
spk_0 is in a church.
spk_0 That's going to be Jesus.
spk_0 We've all got a church.
spk_0 I've got the church of big podcast.
spk_0 That church, once you accept the writings and philosophy of David Hooper, you've got more people
spk_0 coming to your podcast.
spk_0 You've got a podcast that matters.
spk_0 You've got more money because of your podcast.
spk_0 You've got a podcast that people care about and will miss if it's gone.
spk_0 So let's not talk about where things are.
spk_0 Yeah, there's a related ability.
spk_0 Used to do this.
spk_0 Then I discovered this.
spk_0 Now I do something different.
spk_0 That's fine.
spk_0 But way too many people, again, they're going for those easy clicks.
spk_0 They're talking about where things were.
spk_0 I had it so bad.
spk_0 I was living a bad life.
spk_0 I was broke.
spk_0 I was bankrupt.
spk_0 I was on drugs.
spk_0 Josh is right in that people don't expect you to be perfect.
spk_0 Perfect is boring.
spk_0 But if you're doing the nonfiction podcast, if you're looking for clientele that you can
spk_0 help to do whatever it is you podcast about focus on what you've got now, not where you
spk_0 were.
spk_0 And this is you personally because a lot of people have this main character syndrome.
spk_0 They try to make themselves the feature presentation.
spk_0 Is it about you?
spk_0 Is it about the listeners?
spk_0 I would argue that it is always about the listeners.
spk_0 The host, that's the person putting everything together for the listeners.
spk_0 It's not about you, even if your name's on the show, the John Smith show featuring John
spk_0 Smith, even if it is about you talking about your life.
spk_0 And even if you're getting a failure point, how bad things were, how bad you were, it's
spk_0 still about them, either how it makes them feel because they're thinking, oh, John Smith
spk_0 is an idiot or I'm there too.
spk_0 But it doesn't mean you need to showcase this stuff.
spk_0 You don't have to be perfect.
spk_0 You can leave some flaws in, some us, us, or you know, it doesn't have to be a perfect
spk_0 edit even, but don't emphasize it.
spk_0 Let me give you a final example before I wrap this up.
spk_0 You're watching a juggler is juggling pins like the bowling pins, but they're not
spk_0 apparently, I call them bowling pins one time.
spk_0 Some guys said, no, no, they're not bowling pins.
spk_0 The juggling pins or something.
spk_0 Say he's juggling those things.
spk_0 And before he lights them on fire and before he switches them over to the chain saws,
spk_0 he'll drop one.
spk_0 That's a flaw.
spk_0 He's saying, yeah, this is real before I get to this dangerous stunt, you know that this
spk_0 is real because it's too perfect, too perfect, not interesting to watch.
spk_0 At the same time, would you want to watch a juggler that's constantly dropping pins,
spk_0 showcasing those flaws?
spk_0 No.
spk_0 So consider that with your podcast.
spk_0 If you want more from me, reach out to me bigpodcast.com.
