spk_0 Two-part podcast every Monday.
spk_0 We really dig into everything we saw from the previous Sunday.
spk_0 And Ian, this week, that means starting out with a game last night.
spk_0 I don't think a lot of people would have had as one of the games of the week.
spk_0 I think that people have been girded at this point to believe that it's the bills and everybody else
spk_0 in the AFC East.
spk_0 I personally was at the Patriots opener in Foxboro back in week one.
spk_0 And it was a really bumpy day.
spk_0 The Lost To a Raiders team that has not had a whole lot going for it positively since then.
spk_0 But it was offensively.
spk_0 It was challenged, Drake may have a challenging day.
spk_0 Defensively, there are a ton of moving parts.
spk_0 But Mike Frabelman has that team working and it was pretty impressive.
spk_0 It felt like the Mike Frabel teams we saw in Tennessee where they're going to do things right,
spk_0 other than fumbling the football.
spk_0 They're going to be able to be really good situationally.
spk_0 And obviously, they had a wide receiver in Stefan Diggs, who looks better and better from a physical
spk_0 perspective.
spk_0 And that can clearly meant a lot to him last night.
spk_0 Yeah, I mean, I'm going to start with the Diggs part first because seeing that emotion from him,
spk_0 you watch the pregame huddle, the speech he gave, you watch the Mike Frabel does the thing.
spk_0 I'm sure you guys have seen it where he stands outside the locker room and sort of
spk_0 congratulate everyone after I think he only does it after win, but he might do it after the Lost To.
spk_0 And watching him embrace Diggs and they both sprint into the locker room to go kind of give that
spk_0 that really cool speech and Diggs gets a game ball.
spk_0 I mean, it was, you know, to be emotional is understandable.
spk_0 I mean, Stefan Diggs has been through a lot plenty at his own doing for sure, but it's been through,
spk_0 you know, Thomas and Minnesota when Diggs was starting his first go around with this whole thing.
spk_0 He's dealt with a lot and it's understandable to be emotional, to be charged up, to be all the things.
spk_0 It is a fully different thing to be able to handle it on a field and deliver what, I don't know,
spk_0 looks like his best game in however many years. I mean, that looks like a 25 year old top five
spk_0 receiver in the NFL stuff on Diggs. And that looked like the guy the Patriots have been waiting for
spk_0 the guy the Patriots paid for. That was, that was pretty cool. The other part of this, I mean,
spk_0 you mentioned some of the growing pains of the Patriots, the penalties, the fumbles,
spk_0 Ramondra with another FOMO. You know, they're still working through those kinds of things,
spk_0 but this is such a tough team. It really is. Like, I sort of thought this might be a game when I saw
spk_0 the Saints play really hard and well against the bills. And I was like, all right, Saints aren't good,
spk_0 but they play physically tough. Like, that seemed to give the bills some problems. I wondered if the
spk_0 Patriots might sort of have some of the same. And they did. And with Drake May making play after play
spk_0 and throw after throw with the game on the line. I mean, that second down throw kind of down the
spk_0 sideline, the throw to digs on the run to his right. There's so many to like. And like, if you're
spk_0 Patriots fan, you've been through a lot, kind of what North Carolina fans are going through right
spk_0 now, which is a different story for a different day. This is kind of the other side of it. And like,
spk_0 this looks like a Patriot team that is primed to be really, really good. Drake May, it was not
spk_0 unanimous, but he did have fans in the pre-draft process. The issue when coaches and scouts were
spk_0 looking at him was of the six quarterbacks you want to pie in that draft, right? Between Caleb
spk_0 Williams, Jayden Drake, Michael Panics, JJ McCarthy, Bonix. Drake May was the one that had the
spk_0 furthest to go. He had played the least amount of football. I believe he was the youngest out of
spk_0 that entire group. I mean, Caleb Williams had played a ton his entire career. James Daniels was
spk_0 in college for quite a while. Obviously, Panics had the injuries, but he had played a lot of football.
spk_0 JJ was on the younger side, but it played quite a bit and Bonix had played at that time.
spk_0 More games than anybody in college football history until Dylan Gabriel is doing that.
spk_0 And then broke that record. But with me, the upside was there because the physical characteristics
spk_0 because of the mindset, you just didn't know how long is this going to take. And again, I was there
spk_0 in week one. It did not look like what we saw last time. I mean, that throw you just saw right there.
spk_0 They're watching this. Like that was a wild type of play by Drake May, but it's also, you know,
spk_0 there's times where you got a team playing cover to it. This might be, yeah, that's the throw right there.
spk_0 Yeah, yeah, yeah. They always like coaches will say it. I'm, you know, neither of us is like an
spk_0 ex-sino's expert, but coach is always saying the best thing to do well, especially when you're
spk_0 throwing to the field side, the wider side of the field, like just take the flat route on that
spk_0 because you're not going to be able to fit that ball in. Drake may shoots that thing across.
spk_0 Before the safety can get there, he's got a big arm. He's a big dude. He can move. He's tough.
spk_0 He's clearly one, the respect of his teammates here is that going to translate into a Patriots team,
spk_0 making the playoffs after two consecutive, what, four and 13 seasons I want to say they were each
spk_0 of the last, I think for the first time, especially being the team that the Cowl the Bills, you
spk_0 know, at least I've taken to consideration. This might be a playoff. Yeah, I mean, this looks like
spk_0 the commander from last year and I know that Drake May is not a rookie where his jaden was, but
spk_0 that's what it looks like is new coach, new energy, a free agency that was sort of toward like
spk_0 making the offensive and defensive lines a little bit better, which is sort of what the commanders
spk_0 have last year, trying to bunch of veterans to get that to kind of fill in some of the depth issues.
spk_0 It does feel like the commander from last year, I want to go back quickly before we get to the other
spk_0 really good game, which was Broncos Eagles in the draft, pre-draft process, like you're right,
spk_0 like it wasn't unanimous that Drake May was sort of the third best quarterback. I think some
spk_0 people, especially some of the more veteran people, I've always felt like maybe we're like,
spk_0 all right, he's got a little too far to go, but here's what I knew. Teams were trying to trade for
spk_0 Drake May. And while the Patriots sort of said they were open to it, they really weren't.
spk_0 Like the Giants tried, they made a huge offer. I think it was on the clock or maybe a couple picks
spk_0 before. I can't remember. Vikings were interested in Drake May. Like he's really interested.
spk_0 He got anywhere. And the Patriots, and they said they would consider everything. And I think
spk_0 they just never considered anything. And that was the first time that night when I was like,
spk_0 all right, like maybe this guy really is this good, but that's the kind of treatment you give to
spk_0 someone who like is going to be your franchise quarterback. On the flip side of things, you had a
spk_0 team yesterday in the Philadelphia Eagles that we've talked about a lot, even though they got off
spk_0 to a 4-0 start. And when you're 4-0, you can sit there and say, hey, you know, it's all being
spk_0 overblown. I think a lot of that was true. Then you watch the very issues that people have been
spk_0 picking apart all come back to bite them. And again, they seem to have under control. I know
spk_0 Sean Payton said, he felt like they were in a great position throughout, but you're down 21-7
spk_0 on the road to the defending Super Bowl champs. You have to on some levels think like, hey,
spk_0 how are we going to break through? The Broncos offense did break through in that game. And whether
spk_0 it was just the way the Eagles played offense with, I think, Sequan Barkley had one carry for
spk_0 zero yards in the entire second half of the two touchdown lead, or it's just the continued
spk_0 inability to establish a consistent passing game. What exactly is going on right now, Ian,
spk_0 to you with the Philly offense? Well, the thing I'm trying to figure out, and I was listening to Kyle
spk_0 Brandt sort of talk about this very issue, which is basically sort of like, what are the Eagles,
spk_0 right? Like he was like, well, they're a running team. Okay, well, Sequan got like six carries,
spk_0 either five or six carries yesterday. So are they a running team? Like if they're a running team,
spk_0 why don't they run the ball? You know, this is like in money ball where they're like, you know,
spk_0 it's Brad Pitt talking to these old scouts and he's like, he's got a great swing.
spk_0 All right, well, he's got a great swing. Why doesn't he hit good? He's like, well, yeah,
spk_0 but he's got a great. It's like, well, how can we doesn't get in the hit? So like if the Eagles are
spk_0 running team, why haven't they run the ball? And I just, I would say this, first of all, I think
spk_0 they are going to be fine. I think they're going to be in the playoffs and go deep in the playoffs
spk_0 and they're going to be fine. I think we all a little bit have to get in, understand the mindset
spk_0 that when it's early October, it's where we used to be in early September because nobody does
spk_0 anything in the preseason anymore. So the Eagles are still trying to figure out what they are and it's
spk_0 October and they're four and one and it's a little bit of a mess and they've gotten a ton of local
spk_0 criticism and they're going to be okay because last year they figured it out sort of toward
spk_0 November. This year, they're on track to figure it out sort of toward November. It's just like
spk_0 to get there, we all have to deal with them being like kind of a little bit of a, you know,
spk_0 weird team for a while. I still think they are going to be fine, but watching them figure it on
spk_0 a fly has been not always the most comfortable thing ever. I think for the Broncos, that was a
spk_0 pretty cool win like this. You know, Broncos team too, like, I don't know what they are either except
spk_0 they've made a ton of big plays at the biggest moments and BoNix has been really uneven. But when
spk_0 they got to have it, he's had some really, really nice plays too. So kind of two teams figuring out
spk_0 it feels like. And I would also also say we can't overlook Vance Joseph's defense the way that they
spk_0 adjusted in the second half. They have this habit of making things really challenging on whoever
spk_0 they're facing offensively. The fact that you have an Eagles team that's trying to figure this out
spk_0 right now. And the way that Denver uses all those past rushers, they've obviously got one of the
spk_0 top corners in Patrick's Sirtan. They've got some other guys who are not household names. But I
spk_0 mean, look at that. You just knew Sirtan was going to lock it down yesterday, you know.
spk_0 And it was, it was impressive to watch at a time that the AFC West, you know, for everything that
spk_0 we were talking about with the chargers in the early going and how good can that team be? They've
spk_0 stumbled in these past couple of weeks amidst ongoing injury issues. Obviously the Raiders not playing
spk_0 well at all. And the Chiefs, while we've seen them take a little step forward, they've got reinforcements
spk_0 coming. It's, is it possible here that we at least have to consider whether or not it is the
spk_0 Broncos that are the greatest threat to Kansas City in the AFC West? We'll be right back with more on the
spk_0 inside. Hey, this Matt Jones, I'm Drew Franklin. And this is NFL Cover Zero. We're just here to

spk_0 slash NFL now to learn more. Let's welcome in our Steve White's to the conversation. Here's Steve
spk_0 start out in what might have been the wildest in a afternoon of wild game yesterday.
spk_0 Shootout between the bucks and the Seahawks to quarterbacks who let's remember we're teammates
spk_0 in Carolina not that long ago and with those two options the Panthers decided neither guys was the
spk_0 answer. Yesterday we saw two guys who both and this is not talking in isolation. They've both been
spk_0 good to see but they're both playing it. You know an MVP caliber type of a level here. What did you
spk_0 learn out of that game? Which the bucks ultimately have been. Wow. I mean first off those
spk_0 quarter they know that both of them are playing fearlessly right. We saw them early in their career.
spk_0 They were afraid to make mistakes. When you watch that game Baker and Sam Donald. Man they were
spk_0 loading up and they were firing. They were taking shots. We're seeing Baker to the touchdown
spk_0 right here but they just compete at a level right now where they know their teams are good around them.
spk_0 The players are good around them in the level of trust and the play call and everything else in
spk_0 the execution with both of them. It's like next level but what we're seeing about the Buckeneers
spk_0 and I've been saying this since the preseason is they you know we talk about teams with culture.
spk_0 We never mentioned Tampa Bay. Tampa Bay has a culture where they expect to win. They go in there
spk_0 like we're going to beat you up. You're going to have to beat us. We're not going to beat ourselves
spk_0 and that's what Seattle did with that Sam Donald unfortunately. In a touch interception they beat
spk_0 themselves because otherwise they were going to march down the field and score and probably end it
spk_0 right there. I just think the fearlessness that the Buckeneers are playing with and that level of
spk_0 confidence is something we have to take seriously when we're talking about a team that can possibly
spk_0 come out of the NFC. You know it's you talk about the Buck's culture Steve. They are so banged up
spk_0 they could barely practice this week. Mike Evans isn't playing. Chris Godwin's just coming back
spk_0 starting run in Max not playing. They got offensive linemen who were out. I mean it's the whole
spk_0 thing and like you know we hear coaches say things like you know next man up mentality and all that
spk_0 and that is all is all very nice and then we you know see a couple teams really go out and
spk_0 have a strong enough infrastructure where they can really withstand all those injuries. We saw
spk_0 the 49ers do it. Thursday we see the Bucks do it this Sunday like they they certainly made some
spk_0 mistakes that a lot of guys playing in there who we're not starters and we're counted on for key
spk_0 roles because they are so strong sort of like internally they can they can deal with it. Now
spk_0 there's other teams who dealt with a lot of injuries who went the other way. We can talk about that
spk_0 in a second. Baltimore would be one but it really is unbelievable. Seeing how the Bucks kind of
spk_0 can withstand all that and keep going and the other thing I would say is and obviously you know
spk_0 this was probably not a great game if you were like a Panthers fan Steve but I love the
spk_0 the sort of redemption narrative of quarterbacks and every quarterback that gets benched can
spk_0 I look at a couple different examples across the league and back. All right like if this guy can do
spk_0 it then maybe I can do it too. And guys let's not look over over the fact that these guys have
spk_0 two wide receivers who are emerging is likely Pro Bowlers. I mean Jackson Smith and Jigba who
spk_0 were seeing right here he was sick yesterday with some of the plays he continued to make for
spk_0 Darnell. Darnell was putting it on him but I mean in Jigba was getting open and making incredible
spk_0 plays and then a mecca of Bukka. I mean this guy is right now the offensive.
spk_0 You're pronouncing it way better than Grunk. Good job. I saw that man. I'm glad that they
spk_0 heated Grunk up. That was that was that was not good. It's not not good but
spk_0 this dude I mean this is like his second game where he's made these incredible fourth quarter
spk_0 plays. He's a rookie. He's getting open but I mean he was covered on a lot of these plays and
spk_0 he's making great catches. So when you're seeing and that's what I said you have the trust. Both
spk_0 of these teams quarterbacks have the trust in their players and that is a hard thing to do again
spk_0 when you played the first part of your career like both these guys did trying not to make mistakes.
spk_0 They weren't playing to their talent level. Maybe they weren't playing to their egos. Now they are
spk_0 and it's fun to see Ian to talk about you know what you would you just said these guys re-emerging
spk_0 not just in systems but playing up to their potential capabilities that's always been there.
spk_0 So I think that is really cool but when you got players like they're playing with that helps.
spk_0 Somewhere there's an entire landfill of social media posts by Bucks fans complaining about why
spk_0 they didn't draft a corner or a lineman in the first round because of all the needs. This is
spk_0 literally why you don't draft for need. It's why GM's like Jason Light are in one place for a decade
spk_0 plus. It's because you have a philosophy for how you're going to build that roster. You don't just
spk_0 collect players at the various places like you get you build a team and the way that they have
spk_0 built the team there is constantly taking the best player available. That was a mecca of Bucke.
spk_0 Now did they know that Baker Mayfield, Umecca of Bucke was going to be maybe the best quarterback
spk_0 receiver combo in the league five weeks since he's probably not but the only nox on the Bucke coming
spk_0 out were like is he as explosive as the other wide receivers? Well he's not the biggest guy but
spk_0 everybody said in terms of just a pure receiver like a football player you want to mecca of Bucke.
spk_0 We've had him on the insiders. I mean he's so mature super intelligent young guy very low key too
spk_0 and I kind of gave him crap about that last time we had him on. I was just like dude how do you
spk_0 find it on the field because he flips that switch man and he is a bad man on the football field in
spk_0 Bucke. I mean credit them for his beat up as they are Baker's beat up no Bucke Irving yesterday
spk_0 they got all kinds of different moving parts on the offensive line. Chris Godwin's not himself yet.
spk_0 Mike Evans probably be at least another week Jaylen McMillan still at all they do is go in and hang
spk_0 38 points on C-Hawks defense. They've been one of the best in the NFL it was it was really really
spk_0 impressive and I still say for Seattle there's a lot of good those are two of the better teams in the
spk_0 NFC on the Bucke mother taste of that next week when they continue their West Coast or NFC West
spk_0 tour against the 49ers. Let's flip it all over to the East Coast though Steve because you've got
spk_0 a Ravens team right now that is also as beat up as anybody in the NFL and you know the inactive
spk_0 list when a we're all texting about it yesterday like nobody's ever seen an inactive list for
spk_0 like everyone on its approval and that's what they had including Lamar Jackson but still there's
spk_0 some endemic issues here starting out with the run defense has been really really bad yes not
spk_0 having much approval players makes a big difference but you just watch them and you go you'd like
spk_0 to think if San Francisco can do it if Tampa can do it if Minnesota can do it and put a competent
spk_0 product on the field how in the world are the Ravens getting absolutely boat race by a Texans team
spk_0 that up until a couple of weeks ago did like they could do anything right Tom even when they were
spk_0 healthy this was happening that's that's the issue right we can talk about the injuries we can
spk_0 talk about how poorly they played against the Texans but this is nothing new this has been systematic
spk_0 ever since week one and when I watch them I cover their game against Detroit and I watch them
spk_0 to me it's basic stuff tell me when you see a defender getting off of a block it doesn't happen
spk_0 right they're getting locked up and they're getting moved and and that's where like whoa okay I know
spk_0 nom-dematic BK is not there okay he's a stud he keeps clear things up for guys but you're just
spk_0 seeing good players getting blocked up like it's it's a weird thing in coverage their defenders
spk_0 are there they're not making plays and and so it's it's it's odd now when I watch them schematically
spk_0 defensive they ask a lot out of the the especially the second lap right the out of their interline
spk_0 back or throw quantum math who we know real clone right yeah right but they ask a lot of those guys
spk_0 and they did it early last year and they had to change some things okay remember when our
spk_0 deris Washington came in to target safety they moved him a little up move Kyle Hamilton back
spk_0 well they don't have our deris Washington Malachi star cuz he's playing back there but defensively
spk_0 I don't know cuz I don't know if it's scheme because again I saw guys it's not getting I mean
spk_0 last year they brought in Dean P's to help and Dean still consulting they say he's still
spk_0 consulting from afar but maybe he's he's taking a step back but again if you go watch them
spk_0 it's just simple stuff man they're they're just getting beat and happen every week like what is
spk_0 what has happened here just individually as position groups where you're getting
spk_0 whipped simple stuff all game long it's it's incredible you know I thought the lions just beat
spk_0 him up cuz the lions and the lions but you're seeing that stuff every week yeah and you know it's
spk_0 it's listen to Harbaugh and he asked is asked of course about essentially whether or not Zach
spk_0 or is the problem and whether or not they're gonna do more make a change the defensive coordinator
spk_0 and he seems adamant that they are not not they keep struggling you know obviously we'll see but
spk_0 you know that would sort of speak to what you're saying that he believes it's more physical
spk_0 than it is scheme related um obviously you know you can you know a good coach and scheme can
spk_0 help but like if it's players you just need to break free a box more like you know that'll be easier
spk_0 when better players come in but um I just I don't know I'm really fascinating to see where this
spk_0 goes I mean John Harbaugh as a head coach has done a lot of really really really good things and
spk_0 I feel like maybe the best thing he does is kind of manage the locker room deal with the personalities
spk_0 and like keep everyone together that is going to be tested that is going to get really really
spk_0 interesting because like we haven't seen a Raven's team start one and four and I don't even know when
spk_0 and you know how do they I mean I how do they respond is going to be really really interesting
spk_0 and now you've got a game that suddenly feels huge Sunday against the Rams at home the last game
spk_0 before the buy yeah you want to get to the buy get Lamar back get other guys healthy but if you
spk_0 lose this game you're one in five you are now in a position where you need to come damn close to
spk_0 running the table the rest of the way to even have a shot at getting in the playoffs we'd all agree
spk_0 if the Ravens are healthy at the end they'll be one of the most dangerous teams in the NFL but
spk_0 that's the Bengals from last year how it works out when you put yourself in such a big hole
spk_0 that even if you do get healthy even if you are playing well down the stretch you need everything
spk_0 to fall the right way real quick and on Lamar last game before the buy 30 seconds or less what
spk_0 of the odds if any we see Lamar on the field in your mind in week six could be on the practice field
spk_0 doesn't feel great for the game field they are still good enough to win and God it feels like
spk_0 they have to but I don't feel great about him playing this way the Rams are sick the Rams after
spk_0 losing that game to the 49s are coming out there with bad intentions this is going to be a tough game
spk_0 for Baltimore especially the way they're playing defensively Rams can easily be five and oh two
spk_0 absolutely just painful losses for them so far it's Steve you're back in part two of the
spk_0 podcasts later on in the show depending how you're consuming this we're all over the place
