The Wild.
spk_0
She's back!
spk_0
I know I'm not alone in how happy that made me.
spk_0
Whatever comes next, Noah and Sarah will be facing it together.
spk_0
They started 20 feet from one another and they should definitely finish this.
spk_0
Whatever this is, the same way.
spk_0
And were those horse hoops I heard?
spk_0
What an entrance, but where did Sarah come from?
spk_0
How did she get back to Noah?
spk_0
Where did she find a horse?
spk_0
For those answers, we gotta go back to almost two days earlier.
spk_0
I don't know if you got the messages from that glow in the dark, cabin with the spinks,
spk_0
but too tired to backtrack and repeat it all.
spk_0
Short story is, we met the final guardian and it gave me the chance to avoid certain death and I took it.
spk_0
And I don't feel bad about the choice I had to make, because I had to make it and Noah understands.
spk_0
He gets it.
spk_0
Who could actively choose death when life is also an offer on the table?
spk_0
Surviving this was the whole point of everything we've gone through.
spk_0
He knows that.
spk_0
It wasn't even a choice, really.
spk_0
Of course I had to choose life.
spk_0
Then why do I feel so shitty?
spk_0
It's not like I left him for death.
spk_0
I mean, he was totally gonna pass the spinks his test, which is more than I can say about myself.
spk_0
Sure, he's gonna face off against the collective, but that was never gonna be in the cards for me.
spk_0
He was always gonna have to take them on without me.
spk_0
It's just that this way, I get to live.
spk_0
This spinks walked me to the far end of the glow in the dark cabin.
spk_0
The place was huge.
spk_0
It took over two hours to get to the end and when we reached it, I couldn't see it.
spk_0
She kept saying it was right in front of me, but try as I might, I couldn't see it.
spk_0
It was a trick of the eye.
spk_0
There was, is a passageway that leads to this shaft, but you could only see it at the right angle.
spk_0
Otherwise, it just looked like a flat wall in behind a bunch of stalagmites and tides.
spk_0
Couldn't even hear or feel a breeze, which has always been the telltale sign of a shaft.
spk_0
And what a shaft this one is.
spk_0
Looks nothing like the other shaft so far.
spk_0
This one is easily 200 feet across and so far, no ladders or stairs.
spk_0
Just a ramp that gently spirals up the outer wall.
spk_0
Like I'm walking on the inside treads of a gigantic nut.
spk_0
You know, like a nut from a nut and bolt.
spk_0
Slow and steady and perfectly even spiraling ramps.
spk_0
It's impressive.
spk_0
The walls and the ground are perfectly smooth but covered in a layer of dust and debris.
spk_0
The first couple of hundred yards were the worst of it.
spk_0
Feathers and dead birds and leaves, twigs, whatever those things are that owls bit up.
spk_0
It was gross.
spk_0
Now it's a little more palatable, just, you know, dirt and leaves.
spk_0
And I can feel the air now, but I still can't see the sky.
spk_0
Logically, I know I'm heading up and up is good.
spk_0
But there's this nagging feeling in the back of my mind that I'm going the wrong way.
spk_0
Not like it's a trap or anything.
spk_0
Just wrong.
spk_0
The Sphinx told me something pretty messed up.
spk_0
He told me that my original version was dead.
spk_0
Which, you know, I knew, but then went on to say that she'd never been down here.
spk_0
Was never taken.
spk_0
Just heard my DNA.
spk_0
And I asked if that were true.
spk_0
How could she be dead before the Sphinx could respond?
spk_0
I knew the answer.
spk_0
I've changed so much down here that it's easy to forget what life is like on the surface.
spk_0
What I was like.
spk_0
I'm sure it was an accident, but an inevitable one.
spk_0
It was always going to be either recovery or death.
spk_0
All the more reason I need to live.
spk_0
I'm the last Sarah.
spk_0
Okay, so I wasn't entirely honest.
spk_0
Even when I'm bearing my heart, I still hold back.
spk_0
And that's something I need to work on, but it's clearly not going to get resolved right now.
spk_0
Right now, I have a decision to make, and it could be my last decision,
spk_0
or it could be the first in a series of, could be my last decisions.
spk_0
Me or him.
spk_0
It's really what it comes down to.
spk_0
I didn't tell you everything the Sphinx told me.
spk_0
Yes, she, it told me that I was dead, the real me,
spk_0
which was a shocker, but with time, totally make sense.
spk_0
That's besides the point though.
spk_0
The point is I lied through a mission,
spk_0
but only because I didn't want you to think I was any more of a monster than you already do.
spk_0
But then I realized I'd rather,
spk_0
I'd rather you get the full picture of who I am and who I want to be, you know?
spk_0
I've made so much fucking progress, and nobody will ever know.
spk_0
Not my friends, my family, the people who said I couldn't change.
spk_0
The people I was proving right when I'd likely overdosed.
spk_0
You're addicted.
spk_0
Yeah, I think that's the point of cigarettes.
spk_0
But coming out to smoke another half cigarette.
spk_0
Would seem insane.
spk_0
Just not enough to get it.
spk_0
You're gonna keep watching.
spk_0
I'm watching.
spk_0
You know, there are spaces you are allowed to smoke in here.
spk_0
Yeah, have you ever been in one of these smoking rooms?
spk_0
It's not a stink you can get out of your clothes.
spk_0
It's the saddest.
spk_0
It's like a bingo pothole there.
spk_0
Can't be sad, man.
spk_0
Oh, it's worse.
spk_0
It's a stone box with a huge exhaust out of it.
spk_0
They don't even have anywhere to sit, so it's just a bunch of nicotine zombies standing in silence.
spk_0
Feels like this place is giving you a good excuse to quit.
spk_0
This place is the reason I smoke.
spk_0
Six months in the end, he'll have secrets really.
spk_0
Hard enough, but I'm a dance.
spk_0
You saw the white guys.
spk_0
I saw three.
spk_0
Three is a one.
spk_0
We'll be killing anything, honey.
spk_0
And what Hawkins said.
spk_0
What Hawkins said?
spk_0
You didn't hear?
spk_0
Hawkins was part of a hit squad.
spk_0
Went after an employee in the pan.
spk_0
Well, they wouldn't make us go after our own.
spk_0
Then?
spk_0
Elvino.
spk_0
Hawkins don't look so.
spk_0
So if he's saying it.
spk_0
I need to hear from him.
spk_0
Careful.
spk_0
Asking questions is at hell a lot more dangerous than sleeping cigarettes.
spk_0
What do you want me to do?
spk_0
You plan on the secret I had.
spk_0
I didn't want to know this shit, dude.
spk_0
You don't need to bother Hawkins with this.
spk_0
My size boots and he had a hair.
spk_0
Only one place I know, okay?
spk_0
Shit.
spk_0
That's on this look.
spk_0
Think we can check it out?
spk_0
Yeah, it'll stop you from running around playing a 4-0.
spk_0
Let's go.
spk_0
Boom.
spk_0
I used to smoke.
spk_0
We had house cigarettes where my go to when stressed.
spk_0
And now the smell makes me a little ill.
spk_0
Coping mechanism?
spk_0
Yeah, I don't know.
spk_0
But I'm thankful to those ill-death sticks.
spk_0
If those morons weren't addicted, I might have kept climbing.
spk_0
But now, you know, maybe I needed the reminder that there are other options.
spk_0
Like I told you before, I lied through a mission.
spk_0
The sphinx and I had a long walk and an equally long chat.
spk_0
She spoke in riddles, talked about events in the past as though they were present.
spk_0
He was unnerving.
spk_0
Like she knew all the secrets with zero desire to share.
spk_0
He was on this walk that I expressed that I was sad to leave Noah,
spk_0
which was and is the truth, but she called me on it.
spk_0
Told me that if I really wanted to save Noah, more than just empty words,
spk_0
that there was still a chance.
spk_0
Of course, when dealing with deities in the dark, there's always a catch.
spk_0
She said that I might be able to save Noah,
spk_0
but in altering my path, I would never be able to ascend out of this place.
spk_0
I mean, guilt much?
spk_0
I chose life over certain death, and now she's telling me I can maybe save Noah,
spk_0
but I'm back to certain death.
spk_0
And I shouldn't feel guilty, because it's animal nature to want to stay alive.
spk_0
And I'm not bad for adhering to ancient instincts.
spk_0
Am I?
spk_0
Oh, fuck I am, aren't I?
spk_0
Yeah, because Noah wouldn't sit here questioning any of this.
spk_0
That idiot would be already running back towards me.
spk_0
The thing is, you know, the Sphinx didn't tell me how I could save him.
spk_0
It didn't give me a plan or anything, just said that I could save him,
spk_0
and that I can't do it alone.
spk_0
Which I am.
spk_0
Wobfully alone.
spk_0
Every ally we've ever made is dead,
spk_0
and one of the last few I knew that the herald who looks after the unicorns?
spk_0
Sounds like he was taken down too.
spk_0
It's the only space I can think of with, hey, and you heard the soldiers,
spk_0
a kill squad went after their own staff.
spk_0
I don't know what to do.
spk_0
I know what I want to do.
spk_0
I want to live.
spk_0
I want to grow old and boring and get a piece of that happiness everyone seems to be going on about.
spk_0
And while freedom is where that starts,
spk_0
I don't think I'll ever get what I want if I have to carry this guilt.
spk_0
Catch 22.
spk_0
I'm dead either way.
spk_0
Might as well save the idiot.
spk_0
It's Star Wars meets Peaky Blinders meets Ted Lasso.
spk_0
The Galactic Football League Series by number one New York Times best selling off their Scott Siggler
spk_0
is not a free, unabridged podcast.
spk_0
The GFL has a star-spanning, high-action, high-states coming of age story set against the backdrop of a professional football league 700 years in the future.
spk_0
That's the Galactic Football League Series.
spk_0
Search for Scott Siggler, S-I-G-L-E-R, wherever you get your podcasts.
spk_0
It's Halloween Month.
spk_0
Yes, that's a thing.
spk_0
And on the Valker History Podcast, it's also Mary Shelley Season.
spk_0
Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, the book, when she was a teen mom on the run with her boyfriend, her sister, Lord Byron, was also there for some reason.
spk_0
And this month, on Valker History, we're taking a deep dive into her life and world to figure out.
spk_0
Was Mary Shelley the ultimate Goth icon?
spk_0
Listen to Valker History wherever you get podcasts.
spk_0
Of course, Sarah is going back for Noah.
spk_0
I'd say it's a flaunt or DNA, but this isn't a flaw, isn't?
spk_0
I think Noah represents something to Sarah.
spk_0
Security, predictability, dependability, I'm not sure, but it's worth risking it all for.
spk_0
In this case, it's worth certain death.
spk_0
And Noah would have done the same thing for her.
spk_0
As cringe-worthy as it feels to say, friendship might be the only way Noah makes it out of this.
spk_0
This all just a right. They killed him.
spk_0
Killed the herald. I didn't even know his real name.
spk_0
Just a stupid title and a stupid cult.
spk_0
All of which is pretty irrelevant at this point because they're all dead.
spk_0
Once I decided what I was going to do, I ripped it up the ramp and down the hallway the smoking soldiers left down.
spk_0
Did I know where it was going? Not at all.
spk_0
But I just walked with purpose. Like I had places to be.
spk_0
And people actively got out of my way, like avoided eye contact.
spk_0
A soldier even called me MAM. It was like they were scared of me.
spk_0
Of course, they were scared of me.
spk_0
Harper was a no-one monster and maybe the news of her death hasn't reached everyone.
spk_0
I keep forgetting I look like the bad guy.
spk_0
Here I was thinking I'd filled the world with a fast walking pace and a resting bitch face.
spk_0
When really, it's because I look like a psychopath.
spk_0
Anyway, I found the smoking soldiers and followed them here.
spk_0
You know, they weren't exactly stealthy.
spk_0
Look like a couple of boys with a nudie mag all nervous and clearly up to something.
spk_0
Then it was just a matter of waiting for them to clear out and in a popped.
spk_0
No body, but definitely a blood stain. Huge stain.
spk_0
Also signs that he fought back, which kind of makes me happy.
spk_0
I was worried he didn't have any of that left in him.
spk_0
There were clearly another couple of bodies that blood enough to make large stains.
spk_0
And if they survived, I'd be surprised.
spk_0
But the bodies are gone, furniture uprided.
spk_0
I doubt they dug the slugs out of the walls, but they cleaned up a bit.
spk_0
Maybe to hide what they did.
spk_0
Maybe to hide what they lost trying.
spk_0
Never can tell the motives of these bastards.
spk_0
Did a piss-poor job of it though?
spk_0
Sure, they mopped up a bit, but the room still stinks of blood.
spk_0
You can taste it.
spk_0
They cleaned up in a hurry and clearly haven't been back.
spk_0
The animals.
spk_0
Shit.
spk_0
The whole reason he didn't want to hide, why he refused.
spk_0
He's animals.
spk_0
Just had to take care of them.
spk_0
And who knows how long ago they killed him.
spk_0
Okay, so how many canned hamsters won Fete Unicorn?
spk_0
What the hell do I do with all this honey?
spk_0
Let's just start with one piece.
spk_0
16.
spk_0
16 splinters.
spk_0
And I'm not talking grad the tweezers, splinters.
spk_0
These are like pulling toothpicks out of my hands and arms.
spk_0
16.
spk_0
And these are all going to get infected, of course,
spk_0
because now I'm hiding in yet another filthy surface tunnel.
spk_0
Needless to say, this isn't going to plan.
spk_0
Not that I had a plan.
spk_0
Oh, and what happened?
spk_0
Yeah, just a standard, you know, could happen to anyone kind of thing.
spk_0
Fete Unicorns, as one does, honey was easy.
spk_0
They had a trough, but the hamsters, those were gross.
spk_0
I mean, I couldn't open the cans fast enough.
spk_0
They were like giant piranhas, but overall gentle.
spk_0
I guess it pays to be the bringer of hamsters.
spk_0
They even pet them.
spk_0
I didn't get in there, but I touched one.
spk_0
They even touched a horn, which felt shockingly coarse,
spk_0
like rough sandpaper.
spk_0
But things went well with them.
spk_0
So well that I thought I could feed the big blue horse.
spk_0
When I approached his pen, he got silent.
spk_0
I thought he was maybe nervous, but the moment I unlocked the door, boom!
spk_0
I fly back, hit the wall.
spk_0
Son of a bitch kicked the door, sending me an avoli of wooden splinters backwards.
spk_0
I didn't have time to react to the scurring.
spk_0
I just snapped into strong Sarah and forced the door shot again.
spk_0
It wasn't until I locked the thing back up that I noticed I was bleeding.
spk_0
So like an injured cat, I bolted and came here to lick my wounds.
spk_0
All 16 of them.
spk_0
Ah, 17.
spk_0
So what now?
spk_0
I mean, the herald was the last friend I knew about.
spk_0
I'm running a little light on allies at the moment, and I don't exactly have a place to get more.
spk_0
If Noah was on his own, he'd be able to wrangle new allies.
spk_0
Everyone warms to him so quickly.
spk_0
But me, I met a bit of a slow burn.
spk_0
I'm on my own, so I better at least see what I've been carrying.
spk_0
Between mine and Noah's bags, there's gotta be something that can help me.
spk_0
That you did.
spk_0
We're running for our lives, and Noah was hauling around the samurai arm at this whole time.
spk_0
Not all of it, mine, you're just the shoulder thingy, but still.
spk_0
What a ridiculously specific area to want to protect.
spk_0
You know, considering we're most likely to be shot at and not swung at by swords.
spk_0
And even then, these things are ancient.
spk_0
Why would he waste the energy required to lug these around?
spk_0
Well, I'll tell you why, because Noah is a hopeless optimist.
spk_0
He's just in case and can't it.
spk_0
I mean, look at this bag.
spk_0
Change of socks, a shirt, easily a week's worth of food.
spk_0
He kept the razor?
spk_0
Oh, we think we're facing certain death, and he thinks he might need to shave again.
spk_0
I mean, that's optimism.
spk_0
I only buy three bananas at a time, in case I don't make it until the end of the week.
spk_0
And Noah plans for what to do in case he survives certain death.
spk_0
We are fundamentally different.
spk_0
Where's the useful stuff?
spk_0
Ah, he even kept the last magnet.
spk_0
Strong as it is, the robot isn't even metal anymore, and arguably on our side now.
spk_0
Knife?
spk_0
Sure, better than nothing, and that is it.
spk_0
I don't know what I was expecting to find that would tip the scales in our favour.
spk_0
The sphinx that I could save Noah, but not that we'd win.
spk_0
I mean, how could we?
spk_0
There's an army marching down as we speak, and I don't see how we can stop them.
spk_0
I mean, a cave-in?
spk_0
But no, no, that would kill Noah too.
spk_0
I mean, what we really need is for monsters to pick them off when they weigh down.
spk_0
That's the only advantage we have.
spk_0
We've seen and dealt with the monsters, but these soldiers, they haven't seen anything beyond babysitting scientists.
spk_0
They're going to have their minds blown.
spk_0
And maybe that's the way in.
spk_0
But how can I use that?
spk_0
In the 70s, four young women were found dead.
spk_0
For nearly 50 years, their cases went cold.
spk_0
I'm Nancy Hicks, a senior crime reporter for Global News.
spk_0
In the season finale of Crime Beat, I share how investigators uncovered shocking evidence of a serial killer.
spk_0
And here exclusive interviews with the killer's family.
spk_0
Listen to the full season of Crime Beat early and ad-free on Amazon Music by asking Alexa to play the podcast.
spk_0
I was such an idiot for not seeing it.
spk_0
Searching rooms for a weapon to use for getting entirely that we are the weapon.
spk_0
Not just in powers, but in knowledge.
spk_0
It's the one unknown for the collective.
spk_0
They have no idea how much we've learned, what we've learned, how we can use it.
spk_0
We are the unknown, we need...
spk_0
What?
spk_0
Were you talking to me?
spk_0
I was not.
spk_0
Oh, it seems like...
spk_0
How would you mind her in business?
spk_0
Hmm? Sorry.
spk_0
This is exhilarating.
spk_0
Freeing even.
spk_0
I'm not without fear.
spk_0
That would be madness.
spk_0
I'm just not letting the fear drive me.
spk_0
I've faced fear in one time and time again.
spk_0
Why not now?
spk_0
Can I help you?
spk_0
Yeah!
spk_0
It's been a bit of a day, as you can tell.
spk_0
I stink to high-help and running around the lower levels and to make matters worse.
spk_0
I lost my key cards somewhere down there.
spk_0
I mean, I'd go back down, but what I really need is a shower.
spk_0
That's sucks, but I'm not supposed to let you through without...
spk_0
Yeah, I hear you.
spk_0
Yeah, we've all been given the same talk about security, but I'm already down here, you know?
spk_0
And this place is locked up like Fort Knox and a mile underground, so...
spk_0
Who do they think is going to break in?
spk_0
You know, would I really come knocking if I wasn't supposed to be here?
spk_0
Okay, I guess.
spk_0
Yeah.
spk_0
Just...
spk_0
Don't tell.
spk_0
Deal.
spk_0
Yeah, I don't need everyone knowing the lower levels kicked my ass.
spk_0
Thanks.
spk_0
It's like my mentor.
spk_0
It's getting easier to see my path forward.
spk_0
The more I lean into it, the simpler it all becomes.
spk_0
I was there, wallowing, trying to clean up my wounds as best I could.
spk_0
And it hit me like a freight train.
spk_0
It all became so clear.
spk_0
For the collective, everything we've been through has been testing, to some degree.
spk_0
At first, testing in a more literal sense, but afterwards, in a more chaotic clinical trial way.
spk_0
They got to see what their lab rats were capable of.
spk_0
But for us, for no or an eye, it was all training.
spk_0
Building the knowledge and skill sets to survive in this fucked up hellscape.
spk_0
We've seen more of this facility than almost anyone else before us.
spk_0
Maybe even more than the archivist.
spk_0
We not only know how to defeat a bloody arcs worth of creatures,
spk_0
we even know how to handle a handful of them.
spk_0
I mean, they know no heels and I'm strong, but they can't anticipate the knowledge we've accrued over time.
spk_0
It's that knowledge that brought me back here, to step one of my three-part plan.
spk_0
Step one.
spk_0
Clear our names.
spk_0
Now that I'm behind closed doors, I should probably explain.
spk_0
See, I couldn't figure out how I, a singular person, was going to change the outcome of what was happening.
spk_0
It all felt so futile until I pulled back that pressure a bit.
spk_0
Instead of how I was going to save Noah, it became how can I help Noah?
spk_0
A minor and pretty important distinction.
spk_0
Because there are a million ways to help, and likely only one way to save him.
spk_0
So I figured I'd play the odds.
spk_0
I collected the only three things I needed from our gear and I went on the move.
spk_0
First was the magnet.
spk_0
Next was my whistle and lastly my brain.
spk_0
Which I know isn't something I could leave behind, but still counts.
spk_0
See, I'd been thinking about the magnet as a weapon against killer robots.
spk_0
For getting it also shut down the fan.
spk_0
So what else could it shut down?
spk_0
A server?
spk_0
An entire server room?
spk_0
And step one was formed.
spk_0
And that's currently where I'm at.
spk_0
I'm guessing that after I use this magnet, I'll have to get my ass into gear.
spk_0
Maybe not having a chance to record again.
spk_0
So for posterity, I should tell you my next two steps.
spk_0
Which are decidedly less linear.
spk_0
Step two is bring the wild.
spk_0
And I know bring the wild sounds a little ambiguous, but I didn't know how else to phrase it.

Most of our time down here was trying to survive the random wildness of a space that's always trying to kill you.
spk_0
I'm hoping to bring a taste of that with me as I head down to meet Noah.
spk_0
And lastly step three.
spk_0
Save Noah.
spk_0
It's easier said than done, but somehow some way I need for Noah to survive.
spk_0
I'm hoping to figure out that last step on the fly as I do.
spk_0
Alright, here I go.
spk_0
Nothing.
spk_0
It worked.
spk_0
Right, let's bring the wild.
spk_0
I may have overextended a bit, but what was it going to do?
spk_0
You know, the room with all the lizard dogs was on my way to the stable.
spk_0
Was I supposed to backtrack? Of course.
spk_0
So I brought them with me, all 20-something of them.
spk_0
They're almost cute when they're not trying to eat you.
spk_0
Here, ham.
spk_0
Okay, that should keep them occupied.
spk_0
I came to get the unicorns because I figured they could do some damage, but they just took off.
spk_0
Maybe it was the lizard dogs.
spk_0
I don't know, but now they're loose in the facility, and that has its own merits.
spk_0
The levels I've been on have been chaotic.
spk_0
Emergency lighting people running around.
spk_0
I guess the server room was a bit of a keystone and without it.
spk_0
And then there's him.
spk_0
Blue server.
spk_0
I still haven't forgotten about the 17 splinters.
spk_0
They're still bleeding.
spk_0
But it would be pretty epic riding in on a giant blue horse.
spk_0
But the moment I opened that pen, that red-eyed son of a bitch is going to stop me out.
spk_0
How did the herald manage him?
spk_0
That's right.
spk_0
That stinky rag thing to let Blue server know who he is.
spk_0
Where is it?
spk_0
They clean up the body.
spk_0
I can't find it.
spk_0
Is this it?
spk_0
Oh, it stinks.
spk_0
But if I'm wrong, get a squirre-like.
spk_0
Look, before I open this up and we see what happens, I just...
spk_0
I'm not your enemy.
spk_0
I'm exactly like you.
spk_0
Trapped against my will, teeming with anger, righteous anger.
spk_0
And would love nothing more than to tear this whole place apart.
spk_0
You and I aren't supposed to be down here.
spk_0
But neither is Noah.
spk_0
And you don't know him, but he'd be your biggest fan.
spk_0
And I was thinking, hoping, you maybe want to help me save him.
spk_0
I'm going to open this now.
spk_0
Maybe you help me and maybe you don't.
spk_0
Just please don't kill me.
spk_0
Right.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Okay.
spk_0
Hi.
spk_0
Hi, Lucifer.
spk_0
Are you ready to bring the wild?
spk_0
Let's go save that idiot.
spk_0
I guess GI Joe was right.
spk_0
Knowing is half the battle.
spk_0
I like the way she framed it.
spk_0
Everything they've been through has been both testing and training.
spk_0
By simply surviving, they've conditioned themselves for scenarios that couldn't be conceived anywhere else on the planet.
spk_0
Sarah is determined to write some wrongs, Noah can't seem to die as hard as they try to kill him.
spk_0
Either way, this ends now.
spk_0
Maybe for all of us.
spk_0
I want to thank the listeners for staying with me on this journey.
spk_0
I can't tell you how meaningful it was for me to not be alone in all of this.
spk_0
Thank you to Curious Casp for their endless support and I will be back again next week for the conclusion of Escaping Denver.
