spk_0 Hey there, welcome to sexy Chinese history with me, Mei.
spk_0 Today I wanted to do some in-depth historic research
spk_0 into the latest show for sci-fi enthusiasts,
spk_0 the Netflix adaptation of the novel senti,
spk_0 the three-body problem.
spk_0 I really wanted to better understand
spk_0 what is going on in this Netflix series.
spk_0 I've watched lots of great reviews on this show,
spk_0 so I'm looking at it from a Chinese historic perspective
spk_0 and diving into a bit of detail today with you guys.
spk_0 This Netflix adaptation of the three-body problem
spk_0 has two distinct narrative threads,
spk_0 and the main storyline is set in the present day
spk_0 and is relatively easy to understand.
spk_0 I see most discussions about the series
spk_0 or about the storyline, so however,
spk_0 the other narrative thread intertwines
spk_0 with the memories of one of the main characters,
spk_0 Ye Wenzhye.
spk_0 And since my channel is about sexy Chinese history,
spk_0 I wanted to dive deep into this storyline
spk_0 and see how it corresponds with history.
spk_0 There's so much real history intertwined in the story.
spk_0 I feel like with background knowledge,
spk_0 this sci-fi plot suddenly becomes more realistic to me.
spk_0 Why would one be so traumatized
spk_0 to want to call aliens in the first place?
spk_0 The show begins with a scientist Ye Joah Thai
spk_0 being publicly criticized and brutally beaten
spk_0 and eventually killed by a group of students.
spk_0 This experience leads to his daughter, Ye Wenzhye's involvement
spk_0 in the Red Coast project
spk_0 and her subsequent contact with aliens.
spk_0 Questions started to flood into my mind.
spk_0 Why were people in China cursing Einstein at the time?
spk_0 Why was the Big Bang theory considered entirely wrong
spk_0 by the Chinese in the 60s?
spk_0 And what exactly was the purpose of the Red Coast project?
spk_0 And this episode contains spoilers, so watch with caution.
spk_0 First, a quick narration of the plot of the Three Body Problem.
spk_0 The background behind Ye Wenzhye, the main character,
spk_0 combined with some historical data,
spk_0 definitely brought some historical truths to this show,
spk_0 which were really cool.
spk_0 In the start of the series,
spk_0 a struggle session scene is depicted.
spk_0 Students were verbally humiliating and violently attacking
spk_0 and then using a belt to fairly beat the Qinghai university physicist Ye Joah Thai.
spk_0 The dialogue between the Red Guards and Ye Joah Thai
spk_0 during this struggle session is also profoundly shocking.
spk_0 Among these lines, concepts like relativity and the Big Bang
spk_0 and the scientists like Einstein became taboos
spk_0 and young Red Guards were accusing the professor
spk_0 of adding now taboo Einstein's relativity theory
spk_0 to his curriculum syllabus as if this is a problem.
spk_0 So why would it be a problem?
spk_0 Why could one pay for their life with teaching a literal theory?
spk_0 And how did the distortion of such truth as this one come about?
spk_0 So the first five minutes of the show actually contain a significant historical backdrop
spk_0 that continues to influence modern China to this day.
spk_0 The decade-long historic period of the cultural revolution.
spk_0 Now most people have a basic knowledge of what happened
spk_0 during cultural revolution.
spk_0 So I just want to review some parts that are relevant
spk_0 to this show, the Three Body Problem in particular.
spk_0 Now when we look into the history of China's establishment,
spk_0 we find that since the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949,
spk_0 there has been much discussion about ideology.
spk_0 As a socialist country that adheres to communism,
spk_0 there is a natural resistance to anything related to capitalism.
spk_0 Communism follows Marx's class struggle theory
spk_0 to give an example of what these theories actually mean.
spk_0 In the eyes of the Chinese people at the time,
spk_0 the United States as a country was based on capitalism
spk_0 and seen as very evil.
spk_0 But in their narratives, the American people were not at fault to these evils.
spk_0 The fault was in the American capitalists themselves,
spk_0 oppressing their people and leading the people to live in miserable capital conditions,
spk_0 capitalist conditions.
spk_0 Therefore, during China's establishment,
spk_0 public propaganda often included similar descriptions.
spk_0 Imperialist America has many capitalists
spk_0 who make the American people live in dire straits.
spk_0 We need to defeat imperialist America and save the American people.
spk_0 Around 1966, discussions about ideology reached a new height,
spk_0 coinciding with frequent political struggles at the top levels.
spk_0 The beginning of the Cultural Revolution in 1966
spk_0 can be traced to back to a speech made by Chairman Mao.
spk_0 Now in this speech, Chairman Mao criticized bourgeois ideology
spk_0 within the Chinese Communist Party
spk_0 and called for a revolution to eliminate the influence of these bourgeois elements.
spk_0 This speech can be seen as the official start of the Cultural Revolution.
spk_0 Now in early 1966, he encouraged young students to form
spk_0 bread guards and engage in struggles against authorities and schools.
spk_0 Government institutions and even society at large.
spk_0 So this led to a series of political upheavals,
spk_0 social chaos and violent incidents, which were quite scary.
spk_0 Teachers out there, okay, imagine all the students
spk_0 who you once gave a bad grade to, who hate you,
spk_0 and are allowed to do anything they want to you.
spk_0 There are infinite chances for disaster here.
spk_0 I remember a high school teacher who gave me a B
spk_0 in some meaningless lecture course,
spk_0 and there was literally no final exam in this class.
spk_0 So there was no reason for me to get a B
spk_0 if I attended every class.
spk_0 When I asked her why I got a B,
spk_0 she couldn't even tell me.
spk_0 She just said, I guess you deserved it.
spk_0 Now imagine if I was allowed to use my teenage P
spk_0 bringing to teach her a lesson at the time.
spk_0 I think lots of teachers would rethink giving out Bs.
spk_0 I'm going to stop rambling about Bs
spk_0 and back to the more important plot at hand.
spk_0 Chairman Mao's wife,
spk_0 Demting and other politicians.
spk_0 They launched a widespread campaign
spk_0 calling people to criticize the bourgeois
spk_0 and criticize the old ideas,
spk_0 including criticizing scientists.
spk_0 So the fate of intellectuals,
spk_0 including university professors
spk_0 during the Cultural Revolution was very unfortunate.
spk_0 At the time, intellectuals generally came from
spk_0 relatively well-off families and had some exposure
spk_0 to Western knowledge.
spk_0 They might have even studied abroad.
spk_0 This went against China's opposition to capitalism.
spk_0 So during the Cultural Revolution,
spk_0 five categories of people were labeled as bad people.
spk_0 A bottom up here.
spk_0 These bad people, okay, they included landlords,
spk_0 rich presence,
spk_0 and anyways, all these people were portrayed
spk_0 in the three-body problem.
spk_0 Yeah, Jo Tai, a senior intellectual at the time,
spk_0 naturally became a prime target of the attack.
spk_0 In China at the time, there was a well-known slogan,
spk_0 the more knowledge, the more anti-revolutionary.
spk_0 Meaning the smartest people are the worst people.
spk_0 Numerous scientists were implicated as a result
spk_0 of this Cultural Revolution.
spk_0 And of course, there were smart people
spk_0 that skipped persecution,
spk_0 but they had to have really good politics,
spk_0 maybe good connections and good friends.
spk_0 And the backdrop of the first scene
spk_0 in the three-body problem actually takes place
spk_0 inside Tsinghua University in 1966.
spk_0 Credit must be given, I think,
spk_0 to the production team for their accuracy.
spk_0 I live very close and I'm quite familiar
spk_0 with Tsinghua University myself.
spk_0 I've been there a bunch of times.
spk_0 And here I'll share some stills and comparisons
spk_0 between the scenes from the movie
spk_0 and the real-life locations
spk_0 near the main building of Tsinghua University.
spk_0 I believe this adaptation of the three-body problem
spk_0 recreated this scene 100% as it was in the 60s.
spk_0 Tsinghua University was one of the most famous locations
spk_0 of the Cultural Revolution.
spk_0 This was the university that saw the birth
spk_0 of the first Red Guard organization.
spk_0 And as the top university at the time,
spk_0 students were ideologically aligned
spk_0 with Chairman Mao's principles.
spk_0 So their goal was to overthrow the bourgeois
spk_0 hidden in the school.
spk_0 And the larger scale Red Guard activities
spk_0 spread from Tsinghua University
spk_0 to other schools around China at the time.
spk_0 Tsinghua University also witnessed
spk_0 the memorable historical struggle session.
spk_0 So Chairman Mao and his wife were enemies
spk_0 with the president of China and his wife.
spk_0 These were two different factions of people.
spk_0 Chairman Mao's wife was said to be envious
spk_0 of the president's wife and her beauty.
spk_0 And it was said Chairman's Mao wife
spk_0 was jealous of her intellect.
spk_0 So to defeat Mao and his wife's
spk_0 conman, enemy, Mrs Mao held a struggle session
spk_0 at the same place where Yejotai was beaten to death.
spk_0 And since this first lady, this president's wife,
spk_0 was from a bourgeois family and liked to wear shiny jewelry,
spk_0 Mrs Mao made her wear a necklace made of pink tong balls,
spk_0 while humiliating her simultaneously.
spk_0 St. Simultaneously.
spk_0 We see Yejotai in the TV series,
spk_0 a physics professor at Tsinghua University.
spk_0 He was hauled out and criticized by his students
spk_0 for teaching Einstein theory of relativity in class.
spk_0 Many might find this absurd plotline a bit puzzling
spk_0 because if you don't know the history, it is.
spk_0 In fact, this scenario of publicly criticizing
spk_0 relativity theory actually has true historical roots.
spk_0 Now, the first criticism was of Einstein himself.
spk_0 Remember what I said about China's number one enemy
spk_0 at the time, the USA?
spk_0 Oh, and Einstein as a Jew left his home country of Germany
spk_0 for the corrupt capitalist country of America at the time,
spk_0 who was said to be hurting its people.
spk_0 Now, the movement to criticize relativity theory
spk_0 was initiated by the Chinese Academy of Science
spk_0 and the National Research Institution of China at the time.
spk_0 These two institutions wanted to criticize it
spk_0 and the three body problem draws inspiration
spk_0 from real historically events.
spk_0 Back then, the scientists who initiated the criticism
spk_0 of relativity theory believed that one of the most significant obstacles
spk_0 to scientific progress is the serious errors
spk_0 in Einstein theory of relativity.
spk_0 They advocated for using Chairman Mouth
spk_0 thought as a weapon to criticize relativity theory
spk_0 and revolutionize its fate.
spk_0 Moreover, the Chinese Academy of Sciences
spk_0 even organized study courses specifically aimed
spk_0 at criticizing relativity theory from Einstein
spk_0 after verbally attacking Yijitai,
spk_0 a female red guard personally beat her teacher to death with a belt.
spk_0 And guess what?
spk_0 The horror and violent scene in the three body problem
spk_0 where students beat their teacher to death
spk_0 actually has real life prototypes.
spk_0 Chairman Mouth met with representatives of the red guard
spk_0 six times during cultural revolution.
spk_0 And among them, one of the most iconic photos
spk_0 is that of Chairman Mouth meeting with this girl
spk_0 wearing glasses in this picture.
spk_0 Song Mingbin, that's her name.
spk_0 And they met at Tiananmen Square.
spk_0 This event took place on August 8th, 1966.
spk_0 Upon meeting her, Chairman Mouth found out
spk_0 Song Mingbin's name.
spk_0 Song Mingbin's name means polite and courteous.
spk_0 And he told her to change her name to Yao Wu,
spk_0 which means to use force.
spk_0 And this young girl's ability to receive an audience
spk_0 with the leader largely was due to her prominent family background.
spk_0 So much for letting go of old customs
spk_0 and her father was a general who served under Mao
spk_0 and had participated in numerous wars
spk_0 during the establishment of the People's Republic of China.
spk_0 So a war hero.
spk_0 In fact, on August 5th, 1966,
spk_0 three days before being received by Chairman Mouth,
spk_0 Song Mingbin had already fulfilled her name
spk_0 that Chairman Mouth was going to give her.
spk_0 She had already used force.
spk_0 As a high school student in an all-girl school,
spk_0 during the struggle session against school teachers,
spk_0 she beat the school principal,
spk_0 Tian Zhonggong, to death.
spk_0 And this teacher was the first educational worker
spk_0 in Beijing to be killed during the Cultural Revolution.
spk_0 The irony is the girl who killed her teacher
spk_0 in the name of communism, Song Mingbin.
spk_0 She later immigrated to the United States in 1980s
spk_0 after the Cultural Revolution.
spk_0 She also worked as an environmental analyst
spk_0 for the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection.
spk_0 And once even more terrifying than this fatal beating
spk_0 is the torture endured by the victim.
spk_0 The teacher in the teacher, Tian Zhonggong's own account
spk_0 before her death, she describes as follows.
spk_0 Under the frenzied emotions of the crowd,
spk_0 I was tortured and fermented for full five hours,
spk_0 wearing a tall hat and bowing my head,
spk_0 kneeling as a punishment, being punched, kicked, choked,
spk_0 hands bound with ropes,
spk_0 band-edded in the back with two rifles,
spk_0 used in militia training,
spk_0 having mud stuffed into my mouth, smeared on my face,
spk_0 and being spout all over my face and body.
spk_0 Compared to the really events of the TV series,
spk_0 the three-body problem only depicts a portion of the brutality
spk_0 of this student movement,
spk_0 focusing on one particular action by Yejodh Hian stage,
spk_0 this jet maneuver.
spk_0 Now, the jet maneuver was a famous gesture
spk_0 during the struggle sessions at the time.
spk_0 It involved forcefully twisting the head, neck, and back of the victim,
spk_0 making their upper and lower limbs form a 90-degree angle.
spk_0 Or even more severe, extending the victim's arms backward and upward
spk_0 or to the side, resembling the wings of a jet aircraft.
spk_0 It was thus named after the jet aircraft.
spk_0 This aspect of the production team by the three-body problem
spk_0 has done a great and commendable job
spk_0 in accurately depicting the scene from that kind of struggle session.
spk_0 Teachers were not the only group affected by this movement.
spk_0 In fact, the conflicts among young red guards themselves
spk_0 were the main cause of most casualties.
spk_0 However, in the three-body problem, the TV series,
spk_0 the storyline is omitted.
spk_0 Now, in the book Yewintia's sister actually joins the red guard
spk_0 and dies in a conflict between competing red guard factions.
spk_0 During the Cultural Revolution,
spk_0 the red guard groups could generally be divided into two factions.
spk_0 While both claimed loyalty to Chairman Mao,
spk_0 they had fundamentally different ideologies.
spk_0 One faction was known as the establishment faction,
spk_0 or the loyalists.
spk_0 They were mainly comprised of students from relatively well-off families.
spk_0 They believed in the theory of bloodline inheritance,
spk_0 arguing that children would inherit the thoughts of their parents.
spk_0 Therefore, if someone's parents were deemed bad,
spk_0 then their children must be bad as well.
spk_0 The other faction was known as the rebel faction.
spk_0 It was a larger group composed of mainly workers.
spk_0 They didn't have privileged family backgrounds,
spk_0 and their demands were to carry the revolution out to the end,
spk_0 following Chairman Mao's directives to overthrow the authorities.
spk_0 The conflicts between these two factions were irreconciable.
spk_0 Although red guards initially consisted of mainly young students loyal
spk_0 to the establishment at the time,
spk_0 at the beginning of the Cultural Revolution,
spk_0 the rebel faction soon became the dominant force due to the sheer number
spk_0 of ordinary workers in this faction.
spk_0 The relationship between the two factions
spk_0 became extremely tense,
spk_0 and physical confrontations were really common.
spk_0 In many parts of China, the red guard groups from both factions
spk_0 would raid military arsenals and seize firearms in the ammunition.
spk_0 The conflicts between the red guards escalated,
spk_0 from using weapons such as knives and rods,
spk_0 to fight, and then turned into stealing guns and
spk_0 became a warfare literally on the streets with firearms.
spk_0 Basically, these two factions were just killing each other on the street
spk_0 with no particular goal in mind other than pure violence.
spk_0 After witnessing her father, Yijia Tai being fatally beaten by students at school,
spk_0 Yohen-Jia was profoundly shaken.
spk_0 At this point, she goes to Anarongolia to participate in the red coast plan.
spk_0 Now, this aspect of the plot may be perplexing if you don't understand the background.
spk_0 Why would a university student run to a distant Anarongolia instead of staying in Beijing?
spk_0 Now, in reality, this situation is steeped in a significant historical context.
spk_0 After the onset of the Cultural Revolution in China,
spk_0 all the universities were essentially shut down, no school.
spk_0 And the National College entrance examination was completely cancelled.
spk_0 No courses were taught in schools, schools were just not running at all.
spk_0 And university students found themselves in a state of unemployment.
spk_0 They had nothing to do.
spk_0 As time went on, an increasing number of university students in this unemployed state,
spk_0 this became a source of social instability.
spk_0 So internationally, aside from the United States, China's relations with the Soviet Union,
spk_0 another communist country at the time was also tense and shaky.
spk_0 They had ideological disputes.
spk_0 So the Soviet Union even threatened China with nuclear bombs at one time.
spk_0 Now, to address the internal issue in China of the university students running around
spk_0 fighting each other and the threats from outside China, from the United States and the Soviet Union,
spk_0 the Chinese government decided to launch a movement called
spk_0 going up to the mountains and down to the countryside.
spk_0 This movement aimed to send urban university students to remote mountainous areas
spk_0 to receive education from farmers.
spk_0 Now, rather than studying textbook knowledge in schools,
spk_0 Yohensia at the time was also part of this movement,
spk_0 heading to the relatively desolate Intermongolian lands.
spk_0 A lot of people actually over the age of 60 in China now were witnesses to this part of history.
spk_0 The TV series also portrays a puzzling aspect where Yohensia faces interrogation by soldiers.
spk_0 Because she was reading English books.
spk_0 Now, a significant question arises, why would there be so many soldiers stationed
spk_0 and managing affairs in remote rural areas?
spk_0 In reality, there's an implicit background here, which is the system of Chinese production
spk_0 and construction corps, CPCC.
spk_0 Now, this was a unique system established in the early days of China.
spk_0 When the people's Republic of China was first established,
spk_0 way back when they had just wrapped up a civil war.
spk_0 And after years of war, China had 5.5 million regular troops and over 100 million
spk_0 militia members within its borders.
spk_0 So while the population at the time was only 500 millions, this means that 1% of the total
spk_0 population was military personnel and 20% of the population had undergone military training
spk_0 at the time. That was a lot of military training.
spk_0 In light of the massive proportion of military personnel relative to the total population
spk_0 and the enormous military expenditure, China this time adopted a system of military
spk_0 management known as the production and construction corps, CPCC.
spk_0 In many border provinces of China, such as the borders of Xinjiang,
spk_0 Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, they had vast and uninhabited areas.
spk_0 And the military function as an actual administrator in these areas.
spk_0 Though they were soldiers, their primary tasks involved construction work.
spk_0 So for example, in the Xinjiang Mountains region where Yeo-Ntia in the story was located,
spk_0 although everyone was in the military, their main duty was for a street work.
spk_0 Additionally, during this time, most border cities were unnamed and instead identified solely by
spk_0 the codes of the military unit station there.
spk_0 In 1969, Yeo-Ntia's life took a major turn after being reported by her lover for reading
spk_0 English books. She was given the opportunity to participate in the Red Coast Plan,
spk_0 a project aimed at sending signals to extraterrestrial civilizations to redeem herself.
spk_0 However, did the Red Coast Plan truly exist in history?
spk_0 Actually, during the same period in China, there were indeed similar grandiose projects,
spk_0 which is really interesting, so this is based on history here.
spk_0 During the 1960s and 70s, the Chinese government undertook a series of scientific and military projects,
spk_0 including those in the fields of astronomy, aerospace, and nuclear weapons.
spk_0 And some of these projects, they may have been related to extraterrestrial signals.
spk_0 Now, while the specific details and names might not exactly match those in the three-body problem,
spk_0 they have provided a historical background and possibility for the novel's plot, which was
spk_0 really cool. Therefore, although the Red Coast Plan may not have directly existed in reality,
spk_0 it's setting aligns with the technological development situation in China at the time.
spk_0 As the primary adversary of China at the time, a significant event that influenced
spk_0 history also occurred in the United States in 1969. On July 20th, 1969,
spk_0 we all know Apollo 11 spacecraft, the Lunar Module successfully landed on the moon,
spk_0 and over six hours later, Neil Armstrong stepped out onto the lunar surface, leaving behind
spk_0 the first human footprint on a celestial body beyond Earth.
spk_0 And he famously declared that one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.
spk_0 Meanwhile, in China, the Cultural Revolution continued to escalate.
spk_0 Its escalation, of course, was impeding the progress of the aerospace industry.
spk_0 In fact, the previous year in 1968, Yautong Binh, the director of the Rocket Metal Materials Institute,
spk_0 he was an expert who studied in Germany, and he was beaten to death during factional struggles.
spk_0 The news of the American moon landing achievement was only accessible to the top leadership in China.
spk_0 The general public remained unaware of this information.
spk_0 However, the news of the US moon landing sparked significant repercussions among the Chinese leadership.
spk_0 This was because, ideologically, it was necessary to demonstrate the superiority of socialism
spk_0 over American capitalism. So just five days after the moon landing, Chinese premier Joe and
spk_0 Leigh issued a directive to Shanghai expatriates to establish multiple aerospace research bases.
spk_0 Interestingly, this coincided with the timeline of the Red Coast project,
spk_0 in which Yo-N-Jie was involved in 1969. So the author really did his homework.
spk_0 Now, unlike the storyline in the drama that involves contact with extraterrestrial beings,
spk_0 the focus of China's aerospace efforts at the time was on studying the Apollo, Lunar,
spk_0 module, and developing launch vehicles and satellites. In July 1970, Mao's
spk_0 personally, in July 1970, Mao personally approved of the initiation of the Shuangguang Man's
spk_0 spacecraft program. Its design was largely based on the configuration of the American Genomized
spk_0 spacecraft. Gemini, the American Gemini spacecraft, and this ultimately, though, ended in failure.
spk_0 Now, in the three-body problem, the Red Coast Plan presents an alternative ending.
spk_0 The transformation of Yo-N-Jie in the novel is a process of profound complexity and death.
spk_0 China goes numerous trials and transformations of the soul, evolving from an ordinary person,
spk_0 deeply tormented by suffering and fear, into a character with extreme views and actions.
spk_0 First off, during the Cultural Revolution, Yo-N-Jie witnessed her father, Ye Jiutai,
spk_0 being beaten to death by students, which inflicted a profound shock and trauma upon her psyche.
spk_0 Some as a coiloly, Yo-N-Jieut participated in the Red Coast Plan, which made her the representative
spk_0 of humanity in contact with extraterrestrial civilizations. And through contact with the
spk_0 Tristle Lair and Civilization, she perceived the insignificance and fragility of the human
spk_0 civilization, as well as the profound understanding of the universe and powerful technology
spk_0 possessed by extraterrestrial civilizations. This experience led her to develop skepticism and
spk_0 discontent towards the current state of human society, believing it to be riddled with contradictions
spk_0 and unsolved problems. Finally, through contact with the Tristle Lair and Civilization,
spk_0 Yo-N-Jieut she accepted the viewpoint of the Dark Forest Law, which believes that the
spk_0 universe is a Dark Forest, where all civilizations compete to survive in a state of constant
spk_0 destruction. And therefore, they must maintain silence and concealment to avoid detection by
spk_0 other civilizations. She believed the human society should also remain silent and concealed
spk_0 like the Tristle Lair and Civilization, to avoid being attacked by extraterrestrial civilizations.
spk_0 Overall, Yo-N-Jieut's transformation in the Three Body Problem is the journey from a victim
spk_0 to an extreme activist, and her thoughts and actions are deeply influenced by external circumstances
spk_0 and personal experiences showcasing the complexity and diversity of human nature. If you saw your
spk_0 father beaten to death for believing in scientific truths, what would you do? Would you lose faith
spk_0 in the fact aliens because of that loss of faith? I honestly think that after learning the history
spk_0 of this behind this book, it actually makes this book more possible, more than just sci-fi. It actually
spk_0 feels like it could be possible that Yo-N-Jieut was a real person who reached out to extraterrestrial
spk_0 life, and that there is a possibility that they will be coming for us soon. I don't know. What do
spk_0 you guys think of the TV show and the book and maybe about the stories that I just explained?
spk_0 I really want to hear your comments in the comment section below, and I'll see you next time. Bye!
