spk_0 talking about it, but in a bizarre twist, now Trump himself may be talking about it.

spk_0 It would have been so ordinary from anybody else that nearly everybody else missed it.

spk_0 In the second and third sentences of an otherwise ordinary self-obsessed social media post

spk_0 yesterday morning, here it comes. Let me read the quote again with a little more context.

spk_0 The fake spin is so bad for Republicans that it is hard to believe that we win.

spk_0 It will be very unfair in the future when they don't have Trump to fight for them. Unquote,

spk_0 when they don't have Trump to fight for them, this may actually be Trump's first admission of his

spk_0 life that he is not immortal, eternal and in charge forever. It certainly is the first time he's

spk_0 admitted it to his base and do not underestimate the ability of his base to convince themselves of

spk_0 the impossible. They ascribe to CUNON. Half of them thought JFK and JFK Jr. weren't really dead.

spk_0 day four you sound like your battery charger broke and then you have to rest all day and not be seen

spk_0 where were you and what were you doing on october 7th 1975

spk_0 the only reason i can answer that question is because there's a tape it's 50 years ago

spk_0 and somehow i'm still here the number one story on the countdown and things i promise not to tell

spk_0 only i told this already and i told it on october 7th 1975 so now you get to listen to it again

spk_0 i was 16 years old i was in my seventh or eighth week at Cornell University and in my second

spk_0 week or so of training at the student owned radio station wvbr fm and they all played me they all

spk_0 had a big joke on Keith's expense the premise of that evening of october 7th 1975

spk_0 was that i was going to shadow a senior sportscaster named gary davis and i would sit with him in

spk_0 studio b at 227 linden avenue during his sports cast and he would give me one maybe two stories

spk_0 that i would read so that my first real broadcast would not be quite so traumatic it was all a lie

spk_0 it was a damned lie i was standing at the edges of the newsroom periodically summoning the courage

spk_0 to look at the copy continually and furiously and noisily discouraging itself from the united

spk_0 press international teletype machine wondering where this gary davis guy was when somebody i did not know

spk_0 and they were all somebody i did not know there that night came over and asked you Keith

spk_0 and i nodded phone for you hey kid it's gary goldberg gary was the sports director of the commercial

spk_0 radio station run by cornell students he sounded exactly that leconic he was one of the 10 seniors

spk_0 on the staff i was one of the two freshmen listen he said find the newscaster Kathy and get her to

spk_0 give you all the sports stories from the upy and start picking which ones you're going to do at 11

spk_0 15 gary davis will be there around a quarter to 11 now i know i told you that gary was going to do

spk_0 the sports cast and you were only going to do a story or two but that was just because i didn't want

spk_0 you to get all nervous so i lied it was all a lie a damned lie i didn't want you to get all

spk_0 nervous i wondered what gary goldberg thought i would be now as the clock swept towards 10 p.m.

spk_0 and i had about 75 minutes to get the wire copy i had not seen from the newscaster i had not met

spk_0 turn it into a five minute sports cast in a manner i did not know find the studio the whereabouts of

spk_0 which i did not know with the help of a guy named gary davis whom i would not recognize when he

spk_0 came in oh and although my voice was pretty deep and i had been on my high schools radio station

spk_0 with my mentor chris berman i was still only 16 and i was the youngest of the 20 thousand or so

spk_0 students at Cornell university right that night and my voice was still periodically breaking

spk_0 and it would continue to periodically break through my senior year often with disastrous

spk_0 and hilarious consequences and now i had been the weed did not use that term then played it was a lie

spk_0 a damned lie i was prepared to watch to learn to make a cameo even maybe 30 maybe 45 seconds of terror

spk_0 reading something this guy davis and selected for me instead i was at the deep end of the pool

spk_0 this newscast that the sports cast was part of late edition had listeners and not just

spk_0 commercials it had a sponsor the sponsor was a prominent local insurance agency the rubber does

spk_0 boothroy agency your protection is their profession this was a hybrid this wvvr it was

spk_0 training station for students but it was also one of the eight experimental licenses granted by the

spk_0 FCC in the 1930s we were not public radio we were not non commercial we sold produced and ran

spk_0 advertising before i was done there i did the local commercials for the jc pennant penni

spk_0 department stores anyway i remember little of the rest of that night gary davis finally showed up

spk_0 said i'd made good story selections another veteran sportscaster showed up and they escorted me

spk_0 into the studio exactly like i'd seen them escorted every prisoner down every final mile in every

spk_0 prison movie the room was so quiet that i could literally hear the second hand moving on the big

spk_0 clock i think i had an out of body experience i think i could see myself from about the perspective

spk_0 of that big clock up on the wall i know for certain that gary davis had encouraged me to place one

spk_0 arm around the microphone stand and hold the ten small pieces of canary yellow wire copy with

spk_0 the thumb and forefinger of both hands so that when i was finished reading the first page only

spk_0 then did it occur to me that i had to move my hands which were frozen with fright remove the top

spk_0 page out of that stack of ten pages not drop the other ones and not knock the microphone over

spk_0 and while i was thinking of this a red light went on and wait addition sports

spk_0 japh hollung said i'm not going to subject you to it here but since i have it i will play the whole

spk_0 thing at the end of this program literally after the credits i mean why not what amazes me in

spk_0 retrospect is that nearly four years and certainly two thousand sports casts later on july 10th

spk_0 1979 i fell victim to the exact same trick again when i got my first full-time job at united press

spk_0 internationals radio network in 1979 my boss sam rosin the one who still does the new york rangers

spk_0 hockey games on tv told me to come in at five a.m. one morning to watch him do the morning shift

spk_0 i sat in the studio as he barked out the sports cast at six forty five and seven forty five and eight

spk_0 forty five and as soon as he signed off with around the sports desk of united press international

spk_0 i'm sam rosin he looked at me and said you got it i sure hope you do because you're doing the nine

spk_0 forty five it was all a lie another damned lie back at my college station one of my former trainees

spk_0 doing the midday news shift who had had no idea i had even gotten the job at upi went over to

spk_0 check the wire machine and saw an advisory from upi audio which read keith old women will do the

spk_0 nine forty five a.m. sports cast today she let out a scream and so that ancient artifact that

spk_0 piece of yellow wire copy printed out on the same machine from which i pulled the stories from

spk_0 my first sports cast four years before still exists framed on my wall it was yellow and it was

spk_0 new so you can't really say it's yellowed with age i may have yellowed with age upi is basically

spk_0 gone now wvbr still going strong and i'm proud to say the old women cornealius studios in

spk_0 ithaca new york and in an oddity that i still enjoy my college debut was on ten seven

spk_0 and my network debut was on seven ten late addition sports
