Speaker A The Becker and Berner College Football Podcast is brought to you by Raising Cane's Bass Lane gas station and convenience stores, Hubbard Radio and 2060 Digital and the Giving Branch powered by Flat Branch Home Loans. And we are back here on the Becker and Burner, Burner and Becker College Football Podcast. It is an episode beautiful Sunday afternoon, Sunday morning, whatever time it is, it's Sunday, September 28, 2025. Adam, great, great slate of games last night. And unofficially, we're going to call yesterday, we're going to call this weekend, week five, survival Saturday. Some of those, some of the top teams, the top 25 went down. Four in the top 10 actually went down, to be specific, A couple others in the top 25 narrowly escape. So what's your initial reaction from all the, all the action?
Speaker B Yeah, just another, another typical entertaining college football weekend, man. Like, you know, we, we talked about coming into this weekend just how many great games there were, so many tremendous head to head matchups. And it certainly did not disappoint, you know, with the upset on Friday of Virginia over Florida State and then all of the games yesterday that we saw, you know, in the two kind of premier games last night with, with Georgia and Bama and Penn State and Oregon. Those games certainly not did not disappoint as we'll talk about here in a few minutes. But just another F weekend of college football. And like you said, Doug, we're starting to see the teams that ultimately are going to be kind of in that final mix when it comes to determining who is going to be in the playoff. And then we're also seeing teams that are not going to be in the mix as well. You know, so like you said, it was a survival Saturday. We're seeing some teams survive, we're seeing some teams fall off. And that's the beauty of being at this point in the college football season is now through five weeks, we're really starting to see who is, you know, who are the teams to watch and who are the teams that maybe we thought were going to be in that conversation at the end of the year that are not so much.
Speaker A You just have to show up every week. Nobody can just go out there and, you know, roll the ball out there and expect to win. It doesn't matter who the other team is on the other side. There's just so many, so many good, good coaches, good players all over the place. You know, even, even upsets sometimes aren't as much as upsets. Maybe as we as we liked would like to have thought of them in the past. Because a lot of these teams are closer in skill and ability than they have ever been.
Speaker B Absolutely.
Speaker A Yeah.
Speaker B And, you know, you can say what you want about the transfer portal, but in Nil, in that matter, but all it's done is create more parity in college football. And I think that's great. Like, I love the fact that, you know, we're talking legitimately, you know, 14 to 15 teams that are going to be obviously in that conversation for the playoff, but that all could win a, a national championship. And sure, there, you know, there are teams in that 14 or 15 that, you know, we would consider better than others, but I love the fact that we are now in a day and age where it's not just one or two teams that are dominating the football landscape. And, you know, we know that those are going to be the two teams in the end. I love the amount of parity that we now have in college football, and a lot of that is derived from NIL and the transfer portal, which they both have a tremendous amount of flaws. But I love the fact that it's created, you know, this environment where it's so much more competitive. And like you said, every week matters. It doesn't matter who you're playing, especially within the, you know, within the conferences. It's just created so many more competitive matchups. And I think that's, that's great for college football. All right, let's get into our recap of week five. Once again, just a tremendous slate of games yesterday all around. And so we're going to get started with the afternoon game yesterday. The head to head SEC matchup between LSU and Ole Miss. LSU came into Oxford yesterday afternoon as the number four ranked team in the country, taking on Ole Miss, who is the number 13 ranked team in the country. Ole Miss comes away with a 2419 victory. Huge win for Lane Kiffin and the Rebels. Obviously a definite hurtful loss for the Tigers of lsu. This was really a fun game to watch, Doug. So what do you have on this one?
Speaker A Yeah, hats off to Ole Miss. Neither you or I, you know, picked him last week. We both thought LSU was gonna, gonna find a way, but ultimately I'm. And I'm sure you were, as you indicated, you, you, you weren't all that sad to see Brian Kelly.
Speaker B No, I wasn't, I wasn't disappointed in, in the slightest.
Speaker A Yeah. Yeah. So you're really hats off to Ole Miss. You know, they, they were the underdogs going in even at home, but you know that this, this backup quarterback who's probably for the rest of the year. Likely no longer the backup, but is going to be the starter. Trinidad Chambliss, you know, again led the Rebels yesterday through the air. 23 of 39, 314 yards and one touchdown. So this Division 2 transfer from Ferris State in Michigan, you know, in the transfer portal, pretty much an afterthought. You know, he's leading Ole Miss to this great five and oh start three and oh already in the, in the rugged sec. So great performance by Ole Miss. It was, it was a grinded out game and, and their defense I think kept Garrett Nussmeier in check. Nussmeier, he had an okay game but not, not enough clearly to win. 21 to 34, 197 yards, one touchdown, one interception. LSU couldn't run the ball either. Their, their leading carrier only had 22 yards on the ground. And the Ole Miss defense was, was, was stifling at times, especially, especially on third down. LSU is only two of 11. That, that'll be a, a, a stat in another game. I'll bring up as well. Two of 11 on third down for LSU. So Ole Miss got the stops when they needed, had enough, enough offense. So you know, like I said last week, you know, last year is supposed to be Ole Miss year with Jackson Dart and some of the guys that they had, everything was set up for them to make a run and you could definitely say they underach now when the expectations are lower. Now they seem to be clicking it into the, into the next gear and that, that seems to happen often. The team that you least expect to make a run is the one that's going to do it. And it looks like Ole Miss is on the, on the path to that at least here early on.
Speaker B Yeah, you know, you mentioned, you know, Ole Miss defense. What I, what I can't figure out is, is Ole Miss defense that elite or is LS LSU's offense just not very good? You know, coming into this year we talked heavily about Garrett Nussmeier and you know, he threw for over 4,000 yards last year and OB you know, is considered one of the bigger quarterback names and just the bigger names in general in college football. He has not performed to the level that I think a lot of us expected him to. And you know, quite frankly, LSU's defense has kind of carried that team to their record thus far. And I didn't think LSU's defense played all that bad against Ole Miss. You know, Ole Miss only put up 24 points and sure Chambliss played well and they had some explosive plays. But I never felt like Ole Miss offense was just, you know, dynamite in this, in this performance. But LSU definitely has some offensive concerns. And you mentioned one particular stat that I, I think is super notable is their, their lack of rushing attack. You know, they had 22 carries, as you mentioned, for 57 yards. That is not going to get it done in the sec. No matter who you're playing any given week, that is just not going to get it done. And when you're relying on Nussmeier to drop back there and you know, essentially carry your offense to, you know, to a victory, that's a lot to put on your quarterback. And you know, Nussmaier hasn't played exceptionally well. But with your, when you, you know, when you don't have a rushing attack, you rely so much more heavily on your quarterback. And he's not a guy either. You know, he's not a dual threat guy. He's a pocket passer. So it's not like he gives you that element that he can use his legs and go create plays. He's going to stay in the pocket and create throws. And when you have no rushing attack, it makes the job so much easier for the defense just to drop back and maybe play zone coverage or man coverage, whatever. You know, knowing the fact that, hey, we're going to be able to stop the run and if we can stop the pass, they're going to be in trouble. So LSU in, you know, it's, it's been a question since week one, quite frank, even against Clemson is this offense has not played, you know, super duper well. And so they definitely have a lot of things to work on in that regard, you know, trying to establish some type of rushing attack because if they can't, they're not going to make the playoff. You know, obviously with one loss already to Ole Miss, their schedule doesn't really get easier and we can talk about that later. But you know, they, they, they had of, they had an advantage coming into this game. You know, obviously once again they were number, they're number four ranked team in the country. But after this game they have a lot of question marks, particularly with their rushing attack. The defense is still solid. I don't have any questions there. But the rushing attack is definitely something that is going to have to develop or they're not going to be one of those teams at the end of the year. With Ole Miss, you know, we even last year, I remember when they beat Georgia at home, I think Ole Miss is a really Tough place to play. Like, you know, I think that's an underrated place to play in Oxford. Those fans get up for those games and it's, it's crazy environment. I, I think they're a good team. You know, I think Trinidad Chambliss, as you mentioned, you know, nobody really knew of him. Everybody talked about coming in this year, how good Austin Simmons was going to be and you know, potential dark horse Heisman candidate. You know, we, he had that drive against Georgia last year. What, you know, he was Jackson darts backup and a lot of people were high on him. But this chainless kid has come in, you know, basically irrelevant and just completely balled out. You know, he can do with his arm as he threw for over 300 yards and a touchdown. Did it with his legs against, against LSU as well. Ran for 71. This kid's really, really good. And you know, they established both the run game and the pass game against LSU and were able to do enough to, you know, to secure victory. So I am very impressed with Ole Miss and this is a huge win for them as they, as they continue to make their way throughout the season.
Speaker A Yeah, I think it hurt LSU that Nuss Meyer was not, is not an RPO type of guy. You know, he's, he's not a threat to run, to run at all. So obviously, you know, they take away his ability to throw. You know, he's, he's kind of a sitting duck back there in the, in the pocket. So looking forward real quick at. At old Mrs. Schedule so that next week they, they're off and they're home against Washington State. Then they have a big one, two big ones back to back at Georgia and at Oklahoma. So that'll, that'll really tell us for sure. Give us even more insights into if Ole Miss can. Can run the gauntlet there or, or not. But heck of a start. Got to give some props to Lane Kiffin, who we don't always necessarily care for particularly. And he. I guess he, he won. He won the, the bat. The, the family battle yesterday.
Speaker B That's a whole nother story. That's crazy.
Speaker A He did win the family battle. In case, in case you're unaware, his. His daughter is dating the LSU linebacker Whit Week. So I guess her allegiances this week are, are with dad.
Speaker B What is she thinking? Like, I don't know. Like, you know, I don't know if she doesn't like her dad or whatever the case is. Judging by some of the videos that I saw yesterday, it seems like she's an Ole Miss fan. I just don't know how you can, can go date another. I mean he's a stud too. He's a really good player. And how you can go date another guy from, I mean one of your dad's rival schools, I don't know. That's a weird situation. And not for one, you know, not for any of my business to get into. But yeah, that is, that is weird. Yeah, I guess credit to Lane on that, on that facet. Yeah. Congrats on winning the, the family battle.
Speaker A We'll leave the commentary on that to tmz.
Speaker B Yeah, that's not. Yeah, that's not our, that's not our forte. Not our forte, that's for sure. All right, let's get into our next game. And this one was, you know, probably the. Of the four games that we previewed last week, this one was probably most uneventful and the fact that it was just wasn't a tremendous offensive performance from, from either team. But the unranked Auburn Tigers traveled to College Station to take on the number nine ranked Texas A and M Aggies. Texas A and M walks away with this one with a 1610 victory. Was really just a defensive battle from start to finish. Neither offense could really get anything going besides I guess some of A and M's rushing attack and Le'Veon Moss who we'll talk about here in a second, but just really a defensive battle. And both of these teams I think, you know, pride themselves on their defense and having quality defenses. I know certainly Mike Elko has that defensive background and you know, Hugh Freeze has put together a pretty solid team overall but once again just a defensive battle from start to finish and a six point victory for the number nine ranked Aggie. So Doug, what do you have on this game?
Speaker A Yeah, Texas A and M defense was, was, was stellar yesterday. They, they obviously played well. Held Auburn to just 10 points offensively. Marcel Reed was steady. 1522, 207 yards. No, no touchdowns. The, the rushing attack was very effective. 47 carries for 207 yards total. Le' the workhorse back there, he had 21 of those carries for 139 of those yards and one touchdown. The wide out Casey Concepcion, the transfer, seven catches, 113 yards for, for A and M. But it was definitely, you know, a grinded out, a grinded out type of game. Jackson Arnold was, was pressured again throughout, throughout the game. So you know, hats off to, hats off to the defense of Texas A and M. Holding Auburn to just 177 total yards and going back to the third down thing again. Auburn O of 13 on third down. Adam O of 13 on third down. Oh, of 2 on fourth down. To quote Jim Mora, I don't care what level of football you're playing at, if you can't convert 1 3rd or 4th down in the game, you're not going to win that football game. You're not going to win that football game. So Texas A and M, you know, looks good. You know, that, that win over Notre Dame. Notre Dame continues to look impressive again. I still think they're, they're just as a quick aside, I definitely still think they're alive for the, for the playoffs so that their, their win at Notre Dame, you know, is looking better, looking better every week. Auburn back to the drawing board offensively there. Hugh Freeze. Better, better come up with something otherwise the, the fans and the planes are going to be going to be calling for his job yet again.
Speaker B Yeah, you know, I think, you know, once again, to talk about Auburn, you know, like you mentioned, 177 yards offensively is never going to get it done. You know, 52 yards rushing, 125 yards passing, that's not good enough. Right. And you know, Texas A and M defense there, I think their defense is really stout. And you know, once again, Mike Oko is a defensive guy, so he's always going to, you know, produce good defenses and have a good defense out there. But anytime, like I said, you have 177 yards of total offense that is just never going to be good enough to get it done. A and M, I'm, I've been really impressed. You know, obviously I, you know, I watched their game against Notre Dame from start to finish, you know, and I talked about their weapons in that game with, you know, Le'Veon Moss, with Casey Concepcion, Mario Craver, obviously Marcel Reed's a dual threat. Guy can use his arm and his legs. Wasn't, once again, wasn't the best offensive performance for them, but they got it done. And to their credit, they are now 40 and they're a top 10 team. And you know, I've been, I've been impressed with the way that they, what they have played their defense once again. And this has, you know, been a, a problem for Auburn, I guess, this year. Their defense had five sacks and six tackles for loss. That's a huge, you know, indic of success. And you know, once again they have a pretty stout defense, so big win for A M. And you know, Auburn, Hugh Freeze has just not been able to establish any Type of, you know, success at Auburn since he's, since he's been there and you know, like you said, it's kind of back to the drawing board and if they can't figure out their offense because Jackson Arnold isn't, you know, he can definitely use his legs, you know, obviously couldn't this game. And they, you know, credit to A and M for, for keeping him under control. But he has not the most successful passer in his college career. And if you can't pass the ball nor throw the ball, you're going to have a hard time winning games, as was evident in this one. So credit to A and M, credit to, you know, them for kind of fighting this one out after, you know, just kind of a back and forth defensive battle, but certainly a good win for them. And once again they remain undefeated and undefeated in the SEC. So they're going to, to keep their top 10 ranking and continue on.
Speaker A Yeah, they've got a favorable schedule coming up. They got home to Mississippi State, home to Florida, then at Arkansas, and then a tough stretch at LSU and at Mizzou. And then they'll close out the year on Thanksgiving weekend at Texas. So some challenging games on the horizon. Not necessarily immediately, but I think you could easily make a case that they should be 70 heading into the game in Death Valley and LSU. So that'll be. We'll see if they can survive the next three weeks and get it, get into LSU undefeated. That'd be a great game. Especially if it were. Especially if it were a night game in Death Valley.
Speaker B Absolutely. All right, Doug, I am ecstatic to get into our last two recaps. And these were, you know, really two of the games that dug and identified. Doug and I identified at the beginning of the year as being, you know, two of the biggest games in the entire college football season. And so, and like we talked, Doug, these games did not disappoint one bit. So we'll talk about the Big Ten matchup first. So the number six Oregon Ducks travel to Happy Valley to take on the number three ranked Penn State Nittany Lions. Just an absolute shootout of a game between both teams. You know, it looked like Oregon had the advantage there in the fourth quarter. You know, credit to Penn State, they fight back, they, you know, they tie the game up with under a minute remaining to force it into overtime. And obviously overtime did not disappoint with Oregon pulling out a 30 to 24 victory in happy Valley. It was a night game, it was a white out. Just an unbelievable atmosphere in Happy Valley. And this was a tremendous game to watch. Doug, like I talk with you, I watched the majority of this game and this was just a, a such a high quality, entertaining football game from start to finish. So huge win for the Ducks. Doug, what do you have on this one?
Speaker A Yeah, well, I'm just going to start my commentary with just two words. Quack, quack, quack, quack. Go. Go Ducks. Neither you or I picked, picked Oregon last week, but it took some, some gumption to come back from kind of blowing that, that fourth quarter lead. Clearly, you know, Penn State had into overtime and even had Oregon, you know, down to their, their final play in the, in the first overtime there. So, you know, hats off to Dan Lanning for, for keeping Oregon positive. You know, they could have had a negative attitude going into that going into the overtime, but, but they didn't. They kept their chin up. That drew a lar pass at the end there. I'm sure you'll comment on that. I will, yeah, no doubt. But hey, you know the way, I love the way that Dan Lanning celebrates big wins. He was, he was going around bear hugging everybody, almost tackling some of his own staff.
Speaker B I don't know if I've ever seen a human have that much energy before. Like watching him last night after that game.
Speaker A Yeah, man, he was, he was into it. You definitely aren't, gonna, aren't gonna say, say otherwise for that. So. He's extraordinarily passionate and he's extraordinarily passionate, you know, about his quarterback. He was, he was gushing about Dante Moore after, after last night's game and why not? Moore was, was solid, solid. 29 of 39. The transfer from UCLA. 248 yards, three touchdowns through the air. The ground attack was also good for Oregon. A collective 176 yards on the ground. And up until like, you know, the, the back end of the fourth quarter, I thought, I thought Oregon controlled the game for the most part. Kind of seeded that, you know, at the end of the regulation to Penn State but then got got that momentum back in, in, in double overtime. So just another, another letdown for, for Penn State. You know, if once again James Franklin can't win the big game, everything was set up for him to do it here. Home game night game, wide out, number three favored. Still couldn't get it done. Adam, if not now, when?
Speaker B It's a great question. It's a great question. So I want to talk about Oregon first, Doug, before I get into my, my Penn State rant, I am super Impressed. You know, we talked about him coming into this year, you know, kind of unknown. You know, he was a very highly touted high school recruit and started his career at ucla. Didn't have a ton of success there. Sat behind Dylan Gabriel last year as the Ducks backup quarterback. But then coming into this year, you know, we knew, hey, this, this kid's very talented. Just hasn't, you know, been on a platform to really prove himself. And, man, did he prove himself last night. You know, went 29 of 39, 248 yards, three touchdown passes, no picks. Also ran for 35 yards. I think this kid is an absolute stud. I was super impressed with him last night. I was very, very impressed with his composure. I just never felt like he got rattled at any point, you know, and that Penn State defense is very good. You know, Jim Knowles, their defensive coordinator, who came over from Ohio State, you know, they have some dudes on that defensive side of the ball for, for Penn State. And I just thought Dante Moore was, was just super solid from start to finish. Was he perfect? No, but I, you know, I, I think he's just an absolute, you know, all star. I, you know, as Dan Lenning said at the, at the end of the game, I, I am very, very impressed with him. And, and this is a kid now, after this type of performance that he is now effectively in this Heisman Trophy conversation. I, I just think the way that, you know, he can use both of his, you know, both his arm and his legs, he is a absolute stud. And I, I, you know, with this win, you know, this, this could very well carry Oregon again to a potential undefeated regular season, you know, depending upon how things go and obviously depending upon the health of everybody on their team. But I come away super impressed with him in this game. I also want to give a shout out. And this is a kid who, you know, we're kind of familiar with in the St. Louis area. The freshman running back, Dier Hill Jr. He went to Altoff Catholic just across the river in Illinois. And I remember him last year just putting up unbelievable numbers there as a high school player. And then obviously coming into Oregon, he was an early enrollee last year in January, so kind of got his or got his career started pretty early. But this dude has come in and really provided, you know, a lot of productivity for that offense. You know, ran for 82 yards last night, had some really good carries, and also had two receptions for 12 yards and a touchdown. Been super impressed with him. So I want to give him a quick shout out because he's another kind of electric player for them who is very, very young and, you know, kind of the, the, the sky is the limit for him. So, and with obviously him being a local guy, want to give him a shout out because he's proven to be one of their more effective players offensively. But once again, I just, I, I love Dan Lanning. Like, I, I, I think that guy's awesome. Like, I just love the way that he coaches. I love the passion that he coaches with. I love his intensity. In his interview last night, he looked like he was on drugs. Like, just, I love his passion. I love what he's done with that program. Also, another Missouri guy, which is awesome. You know, he started his career as a high school teacher. I'm sorry, not a high school teacher, but a elementary school teacher and a high school coach. His journey is awesome. I just, I love everything about him. I love everything that he's done at Oregon. This is a great program to watch right now, and he, he deserves a ton of credit for, for what he's done. So. Huge win for them. All right, let's talk about Penn State. James Franklin. Like, I, I, I, I don't want to root against him like, in, in this game, honestly, for as much of a fan of, of Dan Lanning as I am, I, I wanted Penn State, like, I found myself wanting Penn State to win this. I just, I feel bad for James Franklin that he has to continue to answer the question of why you can't win the big game like he can't. And like you said, last night was the most advantageous situation for them. It's a home game. It, it's at night, it's a white out. You're the favorite, to be quite frank with you. And I think they have the better team all around. I can't figure out for the life of me, Doug, why this program can't win a big game. I think part of it, to be quite honest, is I don't think Drew Aller is that good. I just, you know, and you know, he's going to take a lot of criticism for that last throw, which was not a good throw. I, you know, I texted Doug last night as I was watching this game, like, I don't know where he was throwing. It was a great play by the Oregon linebacker, but even if that throw gets through, there were two other defenders that were right there. And I don't know if it was, you know, if the ball just had to go to that guy, but I just did not think that was a Great read.
Speaker A But he made a dumb throw against Notre Dame last year. It cost him the game there too.
Speaker B Exactly. Right into Christian Gray's arms. I just can't figure out, Doug, why this team can't do it. You know, and they've gotten so close so many times. They were close against Ohio State last year and couldn't score at the goal line. They're close again against Oregon this year. They just cannot figure out they, they were the better team, to be quite frank, against Notre Dame in the semifinal last year and should have won that game, but they couldn't do it. They cannot get over the hump. And like you said, if not now, then when? Because as this continue, as this trend continues, it has proven no sign of it breaking, you know, for as close as they've gotten so many times, they just can't do it, you know, and James Franklin just cannot get over the hump. And he's going to have to, to answer that question as to why you cannot win a big game. You have the talent, you have the resources, you have the fan base. Right. You have everything that you need to go be successful. And you haven't been. Yeah, I mean, I just, I can't figure that out.
Speaker A Yeah, I mean they're, they're, their star players just didn't do enough last night that they, you know, you need your star players to come through in the biggest moments. And Alar pedestrian at best, 14 to 25, 137 yards. He had, he had a couple touchdowns, but overall nothing that's going to jump off the stat sheet. The, the two headed monster at running back Katron Allen and Nicholas Singleton. Allen, 12 carries for 54 yards and a touchdown. It's all right. Singleton, 11 carries, only 21 yards. So that, that wasn't much, much of anything there. So you need your stars to, to shine in the biggest moments. And, and Penn State stars just aren't, just aren't doing that, you know, in the, in the biggest moments the last, the last couple years, you know, it. Should you put that all on the coaches? I don't know. I mean, I don't, I don't know if there's one particular factor that we can, you know, speak to, to say, well, this is clearly, clearly the reason why they're not getting over, getting over the hump. But whatever Penn State lacks, Oregon has. Yeah, Oregon has. And you know, we can set aside that blowout, you know, to Ohio State in the, in the bowl game last year, you know, Oregon, Oregon's there to win, win those Types of games. They beat Ohio State in the regular season by a point last year. They go into Penn State as the underdog. I don't think a lot of people were picking them, honestly, but they, they defied expectations and came through. So, you know, we'll see how everything shakes out at the end. But hats off to Oregon.
Speaker B Absolutely. Yeah, I just, once again, huge win for them, huge win for Dan Lanning in that program. You know, they're in the driver's seat now. They've put themselves in the driver's seat and, you know, we'll continue to see how they progress throughout the rest of the season. All right, Doug, let's get to the other of the two. Just high quality, high quality matchup between Alabama and Georgia. So last night, the number 17 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide traveled to Athens, Georgia to take on the number five ranked Georgia Bulldogs. Just another back and forth kind of dog fight between both of these programs. Like Doug and I mentioned last week. You know, both of these programs have been considered atop the mountain for a number of years and anytime they face off, it's always going to be entertaining. And this one certainly did not disappoint because Alabama walks away, never trailing in this game, I might add, with a 24 to 21 victory over the Georgia Bulldogs. Huge, huge win for Kalyn DeBoer in that program as they walk away in Athens with a win. So Doug, what do you have on this game?
Speaker A Yeah, well, Pat, Pat in the back for both you and I. We both picked this one. We both picked this.
Speaker B We had that feeling.
Speaker A We did. We did have that feeling. And that, that, that certainly paid off. I was very impressed with, especially with how Alabama came out. They came out very determined that they came out with some, with some, some swagger that perhaps, you know, they, they, they didn't have after the Florida State debacle in, in, in week one there and Caitlin DeBoer, you know, had a, had a chance to either basically prove his critics right or prove his critics wrong. And he came out and made one heck of a statement last night with that, with that victory. It ended Georgia's 33 game home winning streak. I was glad to see that Miami's 58 game home winning streak is in good, in good hands still. Nobody's ever gotten all that close to it, but anytime anybody gets in the 30s, I start to get a little nervous. So I was glad to see the dogs go down for that reason too. But, but I want to highlight the play of, of Ty Simpson. You know, after week one, he kind of looked like Homer Simpson, to be quite frank. But the last couple weeks, Ty Simpson has really come on. Yesterday, 24, 38, 276 yards, two touchdowns. And he just looked to be. He also had, uh, 12, uh, 12 rushing yards and another rushing touchdown, uh, as well. But he just looked very, very comfortable. He looked in command. You could see that. That he was, uh, you know, he was displaying really, you know, throughout the, throughout the game last night. And that second touchdown, that bullet he threw over the middle in the, in the, in the end zone, I thought was. Was really impressive. So, you know, hats off to Ty Simpson. I, I was, I was skeptical coming into the year if he was going to be like a legit guy. I thought, well, this is. Ty Simpson at quarterback is clearly going to be a step down from, you know, the most recent Alabama quarterbacks, be it Jalen Hurts or, or, or Mac Jones or, or even Jalen Milro. But, you know, he seems to have, you know, proved me wrong over the last couple days, couple of games. He's had, you know, kind of a, A renaissance here, if you, if you will. And, and you know, Alabama, you know, wanted. Wanted to tell people, hey, don't be, don't be putting dirt on our grave quite yet. It's. We're. We're far from dead. And I don't think Georgia, you know, took them lightly at all, but they just didn't have. They didn't have the same swagger. I guess you could say that, that Alabama did. Gunner Stockton Pedestrian. 13 to 20, 130 yards, one touchdown. Much better against Tennessee. But he couldn't really bring. Couldn't really bring it last night against, against Alabama. So more of a. I think. I think it reflects, you know, better on Alabama rather than, you know, negative about Georgia. But Alabama is. If, if they were ever gone, they're certainly back now.
Speaker B Absolutely, Adam. Absolutely. You know, yeah, I don't think they were ever gone even after last year.
Speaker A Right, right.
Speaker B All the hate that they received. You know, Doug, you kind of took the words right out of my mouth because I wanted to talk about Ty Simpson because I, I have become a fan. I know I texted you about him last night. Just how I think he's a stud. And you know, we talked about it at the beginning of the year, Doug, that, you know, Milroe, when Milroe was on, he was electrifying. Right? Like he could do it with his arm, he could certainly do it with his legs when he was on. It was fun to watch and he was one of the Best quarterbacks in the country. However, when he was off, it was bad and it got real bad. And I just thought that Ty Simpson was going to provide a level of consistency where you weren't going to have those dips and inclines that that Milroe gave you. Now that I ever think that he was going to reach the peak of kind of what Milroe did when Milro was at his best. No, but I, I just never had the vibe that he was going to have those valleys like Milro did. And he's, you know, kind of proven me to be. Be, you know, somewhat correct. I've. Even with the Florida State game, I'll defend Bama a little bit here. I. Florida State was interesting coming into that game because they had so many new players. Right. They did a total reset after last year's disaster and went to the portal and picked up so many new guys. And to defend Bama, like, it's so hard to prepare for that when you just don't know what to expect. You know, you can guess maybe the certain formations, but you. You don't know anything, especially when you don't have anything on film. And so I think Bama came into that game just underprepared and not to their fault, but because Florida State just had so many new guys and they.
Speaker A Had nothing to lose. All the pressure was on Alabama and.
Speaker B It was a home game.
Speaker A Yeah, it was a home game. Yeah.
Speaker B So I just, I think we're, you know, I think the Bama deserves a little bit of, you know, not to say no credit there, but I just, I don't think that we should be hating on them as much as they. As much as we did after that Florida State game because they went into a situation where there was just so many new pieces at Florida State and they had never seen those together. And it's so hard to prepare for a team when you have no film on them. To this game. Ty Simpson, I. And back to Ty Simpson. I just think Ty Simpson is a super steady quarterback. You know, you mentioned his stat line. You know, three touchdowns total, two passing, one rushing. I think he is a really, really good player and I, I think he's brought once again just that level of consistency to Bama where, you know, he's going to make the right play the majority of the time. And I thought he did so last night in that game. Um, you know, with him and obviously the running back, Jam Miller, just, you know, I think this Bama team, I truly believe, I think they're a really good team. And I think they proved that last night with Georgia to talk a little bit about Georgia, you know, one of the concerns with them again is their quarterback play. And you know, we talked about Gunner Stockton a few weeks ago. It seemed like he finally proved that, hey, he's the guy. He did not show that last night. You know, even with, with Chauncey Bowens, the freshman running back, who was an absolute, absolute beast by the way. You know, he ran for I think 139 yards total. He just had an awesome game. Gunner Stockton just did not do enough. Right. He didn't do exactly, you know, he didn't do enough to compare to what Ty Simpson did in this game. And I think, you know, really the last couple of years, both this year and last year, you know, Georgia offensively has not been to the level that they were when they were competing for national championships and in winning national championships. And that's been a little bit of a concern. Their defense has always been, been really good and that's Kirby Smart's thing and there's never really been any questions there. But their offense has not been maybe to the level that a lot of people anticipated with these last couple of years and it hasn't gotten to the level where they were winning national championships. And I think that's a concern. I think that was a concern in this game as well. You know, just with Gunner Stockton not being able to make the throws that were necessary. And a lot of that maybe is credit to Alabama's defense, but their offensive, you know, production has just not been enough. And you look at the scores in their games and even the Tennessee game they played, you know, much better, but their offense just has not been able to really get going and that's going to be a concern for them as they move forward here. So huge credit to Alabama. Huge win for Kaylin DeBoer. As I mentioned previously, this is a statement victory and hopefully get some people off of his back down there in Tuscaloosa.
Speaker A Yeah, I mean, Alabama continues to have Georgia's number as well. This is their, their sixth win in the last seven outings against Georgia. Even though Georgia has been the high, higher ranked team in virtually all of those encounters except for the national championship game in 2021, I think it was. But other than that, you know, Alabama has proven to, to, to have the ability to beat Georgia when it, when it, when it matters most. So hats off to, to Alabama. They are certainly a player in the sec. See with so many, with these conferences being so huge now, everybody Seems to be alive, is going to be alive until the, until the very end. So we'll see, we'll see how things, you know, eventually shake out.
Speaker B Absolutely. All right, Doug, let's get to our, our next segment, which is our team and player of the week this week for week five. We'll start with team of the week this week. Doug, so who is your team of the week for week five of this college football season?
Speaker A Okay, so we're going to go down to, we're going to go to ACC country here here and I'm going to highlight this week as my team of the week as they improve to 40 and 10 in the ACC. Nice comeback victory yesterday by the Louisville Cardinals 3427 over the, over the PIT. Panthers PIT was up 17 nothing after the first quarter and things were looking bleak for the Cardinals at that point. But their quarterback Miller Moss, the transfer from the transfer from USC, he, he led them back stat line yesterday. 33 of 51, 339 yards, three, three touchdowns. So he also had four, four carries and a touchdown included in those in those four carries. So you know, impressive comeback by, by Louisville. They're again, they're 4 0. Uh, they were a good team last year and I think people kind of expected them to, to fall off at least, uh, at least a little bit bit heading into this year, but they, they could go to five and oh, next week when they play host to Virginia and then they get a week off and then they go to Miami in a Friday night game in, in, in mid October. So Louisville could be five and oh, they're not ranked now, but wouldn't surprise me if they're ranked later today when the poll comes out and if they beat Virginia, you know, maybe they could even crack the, crack the top 20. So hats off to Jeff Brahm I think is the coach's name off the top of my head for, you know, heading is getting his team off to a good start here. Maybe not as high expectations as, as last year, but he's got him rolling and we'll see, we'll see how far, how far Louisville can can make this run go.
Speaker B You know, it's funny Doug, with, with Louisville and I always pronounce that wrong and it's pronounced Louisville, but I'm gonna say Louisville just because that's how I vote always pronounced it. They've always been kind of an underdog in the acc. Nobody really talks about them until they win a big game, you know, and, and last year, you know, they had some success Gosh, with. What's his name? He's the, he's with the Saints now. I forgot what their quarterback's name was last year.
Speaker A Oh, Tyler Sh.
Speaker B Tyler Sh. Yes. You know, they had some success with him, but they're always in it. But they always seem to be in the mix, you know, and, and I, I think that, you know, once you mentioned Jeff Braum, I think Jeff Braum has done a really good program with the resources that he's been given. And like you said, you know, in a couple of weeks when they play Miami, that may be a top 20 matchup, depending upon how things play out and if they can beat Virginia and obviously, you know, Miami's, you know, future opponents as well, that has the opportunity to be a really, really special game between those two. And, But I, I, once again, I, I think, you know, Jeff Brown deserves a lot of credit at Louisville for what, what he's done. You know, they've been a pretty consistent presence in the acc and I think that's only going to continue, you know, so long as he's there. I think he's done a really good job. All right, Doug. My team of the week, and this was kind of the upset of the weekend. Even though it was a Friday night matchup. I'm going with the Virginia Cavaliers and I'm sure, as most people that listen to this podcast are familiar, they defeated the number eight ranked Florida State Seminoles 46 to 38 on Friday night in overtime. Huge win for the Cavaliers, obviously coming in and unranked to this one and beating a top 10 team like Florida State to give a quick shout out to some of their players, Obviously quarterback Chandler Morris had an awesome game, both with his arm and then with his legs. Went 26 of 35 for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Did have three picks, which wasn't great, but had two touchdowns passing and then ran with for eight carries with for 37, 7 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. So in total, he accounted for five touchdowns total, which is obviously a huge number. Tony Elliott, their head coach after, you know, coming from Clemson, you know, was their offensive coordinator. He's really been, you know, responsible. And the whole reason they hired him was to see if he could turn this program around. You know, that Virginia has never been known as a football power. And so they hired Tony Elliott, who when he was at Clemson, was considered amongst the best assistant coaches in college football. When they hired him, he was tasked with, hey, can we turn this program around and make them nationally relevant? And with this game right here, they have been, you know, and also I think what people fail to understand is this, you know, puts them as 4 and 1 overall and 2 and oh in the ACC. So I don't know if they're going to be ranked maybe as, you know, if the rankings come, you know, once the rankings come out later this afternoon. Afternoon. But they've certainly put themselves in a position to be that with this win over Florida State. So huge credit to them, huge credit to Tony Elliott, Chandler Morris, also their running back, Jamari Taylor ran for, you know, 99 yards and a touchdown. This Virginia team's pretty good. And, you know, once again, moving to 4:1. They've definitely put some people or put themselves on a lot of people's radars with this victory. So once again, huge win for the Cavaliers. Huge win. A huge, huge win for. For Tony Elliott as they move into 4 and 1 and 2 and O in the ACC.
Speaker A And how about, as you. As you described it, that electric field storming.
Speaker B Yes. And I should have mentioned that previously. That was an. Absolutely. That may have. That may have been the best field storm I've ever seen.
Speaker A They were on the field in less than like, half a second.
Speaker B The receiver from Florida State, I don't know how he's still alive. Like, they, as somebody put a fake.
Speaker A Account out yesterday saying he was dead.
Speaker B God, like, as soon as that dude dropped the ball, thousands of people. Yeah, they were out there. I mean, like, I don't know how that dude got up. Like, I was like, oh, my God, he's dead. That was absolutely fantastic on the. The Virginia fans. That was an incredible field storm. Maybe the best I've ever seen. That was awesome.
Speaker A I would describe that as like a human tsunami.
Speaker B Yeah.
Speaker A It was just like so fast you couldn't even react, get out of the way or anything.
Speaker B Thing. Exactly.
Speaker A I mean, they were, they were chomping at the bit on that field.
Speaker B Absolute electric. Electric.
Speaker A Yes.
Speaker B So that was. Yes. That was incredible.
Speaker A Yes. Might have cost him $50,000, but I was worth it. It was worth it. Yeah. The administration, they did it.
Speaker B Right.
Speaker A They can ask everyone who was there for a dollar to pay. Pay the fine.
Speaker B Right.
Speaker A I don't think. I think they'll be okay with that.
Speaker B Like you said, that was an absolute tsunami of people. Wasn't like, oh, a few people trickle on and then like, it just kind of follows suit. That was all at once. We're going to sprint and we're going to trample over Florida State players, which I don't advocate for, but that was an incredible field storm. So shout out to the Virginia fans for that as well because that was maybe the best I've ever seen. All right, Doug, let's get to our player of the week segment. Who is your player of the week this week in.
Speaker A All right, so player of the week. We're going to the the less well known Sun Belt Conference and last night late there was a great finish between Louisiana, the University of Louisiana. The Ragin Cajuns were playing the Marshall Thundering Herd and in overtime the Ragin Cajuns cooked up a 54:51 overtime overtime victory. So my, my player of the week is the quarterback for Louisiana. Check out this this name Adam Lunch Winfield. Love that Lunch Winfield.
Speaker B Great name.
Speaker A The the Marshall fans were losing their lunch at the end of the game last night night dual threat guy and he came through and they needed it the most. Through the air. Only seven of 13 for 125 yards. But two touchdowns through the air on the ground more effective. 13 attempts, 129 yards, three touchdowns. So five total touchdowns for Mr. Winfield and Louisiana pulls it out in overtime. 54, 51.
Speaker B I, I love the fact that like when he was born his parents were like that looks like a lunch. I, I think that's an awesome name. Big kid too. 6, 1, 2, 21. Good size. Yeah, obviously, you know, great stat line for him I believe. Is he not Doug? I think he's their backup quarterback.
Speaker A I don't know.
Speaker B I, I'm not sure. Yeah, I think Daniel Beal is there is their number one guy. So I don't know what's going on with him. But yeah, credit to Lunch Winfield in that performance because that's a heck of a stat line line. And I couldn't tell you much about Louisiana's football program. I know they got boat raced by Mizzou earlier this year I guess. Shoot, that was that two weeks ago. Last week. Two weeks ago before the South Carolina game. But no credit to credit to the Ragin Cajuns was also a great name for their victory over over Marshall. So shout out to Lunch Winfield. That may be one of the best names you've ever talked about on this podcast. All right, Doug, my player of the week this week. I am so I don't know why, but I feel like I've mentioned at least this program a lot over, you know, since we started this podcast last year. But I am going to go back to North Texas and I'm going to shout out. You know they've had a lot of they've had great quarterback play there the last couple of years. But I'm going to go with their running back this week as my player of the week. His name is Caleb Hawkins. He's a freshman. He accounted for 218 of their 429 offensive yards yesterday. He had a home 140 yards rushing. He had 78 yards receiving in their win against South Alabama and three total touchdowns. So also with the Mean Green, I believe is their, is their nickname. They now move to five and oh, that is a program that, and I know we mentioned it I think a couple of weeks ago with this pot or in this podcast. Like they've consistently been one of the better mid to low major teams in college football. They've just seemed to win a lot of games over the past couple of years. Couple of years. And so shout out to Caleb Hawkins. Great game for him. You know, like I said, he had 140 yards rushing on 16 carries, 8.8 yards, you know, per carry average, two touchdowns. He had a great, great stat line in this game and once again accounted for over half of their total yards. So huge shout out to him. Huge shout out to North Texas. They moved to 5, 0. Caleb Hawkins is a freshman. Bright future for him. They continue to just roll along down there and then northern part of the state.
Speaker A Yeah, they're going to be right in the thick of it for the, the AAC championship. So right now them, Memphis and Navy are all undefeated. Navy 4 and oh, Memphis 5 and oh, North Texas 5 and oh, and they'll, they're going to play South Florida here in a couple weeks. They'll play Navy Navy after that. So, you know, should be interesting to, you know, for the, to see who gets that group of five, you know, playoff, playoff spot, obviously. Obviously, you know, whoever wins the ac AAC is going to be in contention for that. So if Caleb Hawkins can keep producing the way he's producing, no reason why North Texas can't be in that conversation here in, in early December.
Speaker B Absolutely. All right, Doug, let's get to our preview for week six. And for any of you that have seen the Week 6 slate of games, it's not tremendous. Probably one of the more uneventful weeks that we have this entire college that.
Speaker A Means it's going to be chaotic, which.
Speaker B Is exactly probably what that means. So even though I say it's uneventful, it probably won't be. But in terms of like ranked versus ranked matchups, we don't have a ton going on in week six. However, we do have some so let's get to the first one, Doug. So the first matchup that we're going to talk about for next week is the afternoon SEC matchup between the currently ranked. This will probably change as time goes on throughout today with the newest ranked rankings, but the current ranked number 18 Vanderbilt Commodores traveling to Tuscaloosa, Alabama to take on the number 17 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide. For anybody that remembers this matchup from last year, you know that Vanderbilt upset the number one ranked team at the time, Alabama in Nashville on their home turf was sort of a coming out party for Clark Lee and Diego Pavia and that program. They certainly put themselves on the map with that victory last year. So this matchup, Doug, between both of these teams who are kind of rolling that right now, and Vanderbilt, and I'll talk about them here in a second, their offense is explosive as evident by their, their scores in their last game. So this is going to be a great matchup, Doug. Obviously Alabama is going to want some revenge for that upset last year. So Doug, who do you have in this one between the Commodores and the Crimson Tide?
Speaker A Yeah, in, in, in years past, like I guess, you know, prior, prior to last year, this game would have been a laugher for Bama. Vanderbilt was a laugher for pretty much everybody. It was anchored down for a long time for, for Vanderbilt unfortunately. But Clark Lee and Diego Pavia has obviously resurrected that program in the last two years and so, you know, they're going in toe to toe with Alabama. I expect this to be a very close game to a certain degree. I'm almost tempted on a limb and take Vanderbilt in another upset, but I'm not going to do that. I think Alabama, you know, with that win obviously, which we just talked about over Georgia, they got a lot of momentum going into that. I just don't see them having a, an immediate letdown at home. The revenge factor is obviously going to be, going to be great. They want, they want to make up for what happened, what happened to them last year. I do think, you know, Vanderbilt, you know, has the horses now to, to, to keep it close. Even though the ESPN matchup predictor gives Alabama 74% chance to win. I think this is going to be closer than, than, than some of the, some of the experts expect. I'm still taking Bama, but I think, I think Vanderbilt puts up a fight. I got, I got Alabama 27, 21.
Speaker B Yeah, I like that. So to talk about Vanderbilt a little bit here, you know, we've mentioned Clark Lee on the podcast a couple of times and what he's done to resurrect that program from really as the, you know, for lack of a better word, the like foot stomp for the entire sec. It was like every time you see Vanderbilt on the schedule it's a win. And that's what it's been like the last few years up until Clark Lee leading that program. And so credit to him for what he's done there. Diego Pavia is one of the best players in college football. You know, his stat line this year is pretty remarkable. You know, he's thrown 90s but 94 of 126 for just over 1200 yards yards and 13 touchdowns. He's also had 294 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the ground. He is awesome. He's cocky, he's arrogant, but he backs it up. And so credit to him for what he's done. And obviously him and Clarkley together, that's been kind of a dynamic duo of quarterback and head coach. They have done tremendous things for Vanderbilt and this program. However, I don't think they win this game like you mentioned, Doug. I just think Alabama with their most momentum coming off of this win against Georgia. I just think they're in a really good spot right now and I think they're going to want nothing more than to just absolutely stomp on Vanderbilt because of that upset last year. They're going to be at home, they're, that crowd's going to be electric because of what happened last year. And I just think with the way Alabama is playing on both sides of the ball, I just don't think it's going to be enough for Vanderbilt to overcome. So I am going to go Alabama 31, Vanderbilt 24. So I think it's going to be a seven point victory for the Crimson Tide and they are going to stay.
Speaker A Hot.
Speaker B With this, you know, with the season that they're putting together. So Alabama 31, Vanderbilt 24. All right, let's get to our next matchup, Doug. And this has become, you know, a really kind of intriguing matchup over the last couple of weeks between both of these Big 12 programs. So on Saturday night, the number 12 ranked Texas Tech Cred Raiders who are rolling, they travel to Houston, Texas to take on the as of right now unranked. They may be ranked actually depending upon what the new AP rankings are today. But the currently unranked Houston Cougars who have had, you know, obviously that's been a program that's had, you know, quite a bit of success with them now being in the Big 12. Their schedule obviously gets a lot tougher as a result of that. But this is going to be a tremendous matchup between both of these teams. So Doug, who do you have in this matchup between the Red Raiders of Texas Tech and the Cougars of Houston?
Speaker A Yeah, like you said, you know, a very, very intriguing matchup. Houston improved a 4 and O yesterday. Haven't exactly had a murderer's row schedule, but they did go on the road to former, you know, power conference foe Oregon State and got the, got the win. Texas Tech was off after a big, big win at, at Utah last Saturday. ESPN analytics say, you know, Texas Tech 74% likelihood to win. And I'm gonna, I'm gonna side with that. I don't think, I don't, I don't have enough to say that, that Houston has enough to be able to pull off the upset. Texas Tech likes to throw the ball all over the place. Baron morton,065 yards so far on the season. I expect him to continue to, you know, put the ball up all over the place against Houston. Houston's quarterback, the A and M transfer, Connor Wigman. Solid. Only one interception over the first four games. But I just don't think Houston has the horses, you know, to keep up with the, with the Red Raiders at the end of the day. So I think it's close. I think it might even be, you know, high scoring to a certain degree. I like Texas Tech 34, 26.
Speaker B I like that. So the reason being is because I, you know, we talked about Baron Morton a couple of. It may have been last week. I don't remember what is it? I think I'm saying that a lot this on this podcast about guys that we talked about or previously talked about, whatever. But Baron Morton's a stud in it now. He's coming off of an injury. So we'll be curious to see how he's coming out of the bye week with that. But I am also going to pick Texas Tech in this game. One of the things that is notable about Texas Tech is that they are going all in on nil with their athletics. You know, it's not just football that they're starting to spend big money on. It's basketball, it's softball. They are starting to put all of their money into this basket of nil. And as a result of that they're getting supposed to high quality players and high quality recruits in for all their sports programs and football has certainly been a benefactor of that. They, you know, if we're looking at their previous scores this year and their first game against Arkansas, Pine Bluff, they put up 67. Next week against Kent State they put up 62. Week after that against Oregon State they put up 45. Next week they against Utah at Utah, which is a hard place to play against a quality team. Utah has been, you know, consistently, you know, just super solid. Put up 34 against them. Texas Tech has a very, very dynamic offense and I think that's just going to be too much for the Cougars to handle. I do think it's going to be super high scoring because It's a Big 12 matchup. Big 12 defenses typically are not very good. So I think this is going to be super high scoring between these two. Doug, I'm going to go 42, Texas Tech 42, Houston 30 in this game, I think it's going to be a shootout between both of these offenses. You know, you mentioned Connor Wigner, Texas A M transfer, started for them last year, didn't work out. But now he's at Houston has put up some pretty solid numbers through the first few weeks. I think like I said, it's going to be a shootout between both offenses, but I'm going to go Texas Tech 42, Houston 30 in this Big 12 matchup. All right, let's get to Doug's personal favorite matchup of the week. This is something that I think Doug has been looking forward to for an extended period of time and obviously with Florida State having some success success this year, this game makes this matchup only that much better for any Miami or Florida State or college football fan. So on Saturday night I would assume, Doug, this is going to be game day. I don't know yet. I don't know if they've announced that.
Speaker A Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker B I would assume this is probably going.
Speaker A Seems like it's the biggest game on the schedule.
Speaker B It should be and I mean maybe they go to to Alabama for Vanderbilt in Alabama, but this is I think the better game of the two. This is when on Saturday night the number two ranked Miami Hurricanes travel two Tallahassee, Florida Florida at to Doak Campbell Stadium to take on the current rank. This is they're going to drop because of their loss but he take on the Florida State Seminoles as of right now, Doug, I'm kind of surprised about this as well. And granted I guess it's a home game for Florida State. But the matchup Predictor according to ESPN analytics only has Miami as a 65% favorite through this one. Doug, this is going to be a great game. So what do you have on this?
Speaker A Yeah. You know, know, this is a dangerous game because it's a, it's a rivalry game. And Florida State, you know, having recovered from their, their awful season last year, even though, yeah, they did, they did have the upset loss on Friday night against Virginia. You know, Florida State's gonna come out after that, after that loss and say, okay, we're playing our rivals, we're playing at home, we're playing at night. You know, everybody's probably saying, oh, that, that our, our start was just a mirage because we, because we lost to v. Virginia. So I think Florida State is going to come out out very amped, very, very pumped up. So I think Miami, Miami needs to, to, to weather the first like eight minutes of the game. I think Florida State's going to come out and try to punch him in the mouth right away. So if Miami's not prepared right away or if they get down early, they could definitely be in trouble. So I, this is not a. Regardless of what the matchup predictor says, this is not a gimme for Miami Miami at all. Am I gonna pick against him? Heck no, I'm not gonna pick against him. But I am a little nervous. I think Florida State is, is a legit team, you know, that they obviously, you know, fell on Friday, but that doesn't mean that they're, it cancels everything they did the first, the first three games. Their, Their. Their transfer transfer quarterback from Boston College, Thomas Castellanos, you know, still an excellent player. They got, they got weapons, they got a lot of new players. You know, I hope, I hope this, this brings this rivalry back into kind of the spotlight. It was, it was the game. And when I was growing up in the 90s and an early 2000s Adam and then from like mid to late 2000s for like the last 20 years, it really, it really kind of fell off appropriately because neither team was, was doing much of anything for, for, for a while there, or at least Miami wasn't. Florida State at least had the championship with, with Jameis Winston, but this used to be, you know, the game of the year, and it'll get back up to that stature starting, starting this year. So I like Miami in this one. I think they're the better team. I think they should win. But you know, just because people think that they should win doesn't automatically mean it will, but I'm hoping, I'm hoping that the matchup predictor is, is correct. So definitely going with the, with the Hurricanes. If Carson Beck comes out and plays the way that he has the first number of weeks they can establish the running game with Mark Fletcher. I think they should be just fine. It's going to be a raucous atmosphere at Doe Campbell, but I like the, I like the uh, emerging 2716 over Florida State.
Speaker B All right, Doug, you mentioned it. I'm glad you did. I love the fact this rivalry is back. I love the fact that both of these teams are again, nationally relevant because I think this is one of the more special rivalries that we have in college football. And I think it's great that, that both of these teams are having some success and obviously their head coaches are to credit for that. But I think it's just great for football, great for college football that this rivalry is back. Here's what I have on this one. I think Miami is for real and I don't really think this game's going to be close. I don't know why I have that feeling, but I think this is going to be a double digit victory for Miami. And I'll give you the reason why. I think Miami on both sides of the ball is just a better team. You know, I think they have the better offense, I think they have a better defense. As we've talked, you know, quite a bit about with them over the last couple of weeks, I just think they're the better team on both sides. And as a result of that, you know, and this is going to be a tough atmosphere as we saw with Alabama going in their week one. It's not an easy place to play. But I'm a fan. I've become a. I don't want to say fan, I don't want to give you that credit, but I have become.
Speaker A Can'T use that word.
Speaker B Entertained by this Miami team. I think Carson Beck has resurrected what he had at, you know, his first couple of years, his first, you know, whatever is however long he was at Georgia. You know, everybody was kind of down on this kid last year because of his performance. You know, he got hurt, he transfers. I think he just needed a new change of scenery and I think with this, you know, he had, has done a such a great job of leading that program and leading that offense. I also think they have maybe the best defensive player in college football on their team in Bain. What's Bain? Sorry, what's Bane's first? Ruben. Ruben Bane. I forgot I was blanking on that. I think Reuben Bain is an absolute monster. I think if he, if he's not the best, he's certainly one of the best players in college football. I think he is an NFL guy. I think he's a high, you know, high football first round pick. I've been super impressed with watching him as well as the rest of that defense, you know, these first few weeks of the season. So I don't think it's going to be close, Doug. I'm going to go. Miami 31, Florida State 14. I think Florida State was exposed in some areas with that game against Virginia. I think their defense, I don't think their defense is tremendous. You do got to watch out for Castellanos. I think they do have some weapons on that offense and obviously Gus Malzan is their offensive coordinator. So I'm sure he's going to dial up some type of plan. But I think Corey Heatherman is going to have that defense ready to play and they're going to be able to counter anything that offense throws at them. So I'm going to go. Miami 31, Florida State 14. They're going to walk out of there with another win and a 50 record, 10 in the ACC and they are going to continue to stay in that top five in that top five poll. So like I said, I'm not, I'm not a fan of Miami, Doug, but I am entertained by their program right now.
Speaker A Yeah, I'm hoping it kind of turns out like, like the, the 2001 game where Miami went in. Florida State had had their number and won like five or six in a row. Miami was, was higher ranked. They were the favorite. But you know, playing at Florida State, nobody was winning at Florida State at that time. And we went up and, and beat the heck out of them. 49, 27. That was the, the era of Ken Dorsey.
Speaker B Oh wow.
Speaker A Ken Dorsey. I'm going, going back a while for you, you college football fans that Andre Johnson got off to a quick start. They had a blocked punch punt and then got a turnover and threw a 30, 38 yard touchdown all in like the first six minutes of the game. And Florida State was pretty demoralized after that. Chris Ricks, Remember Chris Ricks?
Speaker B That name doesn't sound familiar.
Speaker A Sorry, Doug. Remember Adam is significantly younger than me.
Speaker B Four years old when that game.
Speaker A Four years old.
Speaker B 2001.
Speaker A 2001.
Speaker B I was four.
Speaker A Yeah, he was four. He was four. Doesn't recall that one.
Speaker B Sorry.
Speaker A But I, I remember every play. I remember every play. So if it turns out something like that, you know, we'll take it. But hopefully the U will go up there and, and, and have their way with the, with the Seminoles for sure.
Speaker B All right. So that wraps up our week recap of week five preview of week six. Once again, just because this is not a tremendous slate of ranked versus ranked matchups this week doesn't take away from the fact there's probably going to be some entertaining matchups between some of these teams throughout all of college football this week. So Doug, what do you got for us to wrap it up here for week four?
Speaker A Yeah, I mean just a couple, you know, some other things quickly from, from yesterday where you know, ranked teams just barely hung on. Georgia Tech was in a dog fight at, at Wake Forest. They could have easily, you know, gone down there. Indiana went up to, to Iowa. I was that sneaky, sneaky team. They always seem to play the, the top teams well. Took a late like 50 yard touchdown pass from Mendoza to Surat for Indiana to uh, to pull that one out. So you know, doesn't matter what, what numbers are in front of, in front of these teams, you got to tune in every week because there's going to be, there's going to be excitement from 11am Till, you know, who knows, midnight or later pretty much every week. So don't, don't sleep on, on week six just because it doesn't appear as though there's some, some great matchups. That's when they usually sneak up on you and we have some great football.
Speaker B Absolutely. And to Doug's point, once again, you know, know there were some matchups yesterday that maybe weren't as high quality that ended up being really close. You know. 10 of Tennessee squeaked one away from Mississippi State with a 41 to 34 victory in overtime. And then shout out to Illinois for the bounce back victory against the Trojans of USC, winning on a game winning field goal 34 to 32 to get back on track after their, their butt whipping against Indiana the week before. So once again to Doug's point, you never know what's going to happen. It's college football. Every team's got to bring it on any given day, any given night. And that's the beauty of this sport right now.
Speaker A Absolutely. So that's why, that's why you and I turn in, tune in every week and you know, we hope you guys tune in every week as well. So be sure to tune in next week when we get the Week 6 recap and Week 7 preview on the Becker and Burner, Burner and Becker college football podcast.
Speaker B Ra.
